Today’s forecast.
Ok, so last night didn’t quite go as planned as the much-heralded Gallardo gave up 11 runs in 2 innings. But I have a chance to redeem myself today. This time, I think Chris Young, a real Cy Young candidate will beat the Cardinals in St. Louis. The St. Louis Cardinals aren scoring much, and wins have been hard to come by lately. Somehow, though, they are very much alive in the crappy NL Central.
The Cardinals look to continue their strong play at home Thursday night when they close a four-game series against the San Diego Padres. Kip Wells allowed one unearned run in seven innings and Juan Encarnacion and Albert Pujols had first-inning RBIs, leading St. Louis to a 2-1 victory Wednesday. It was only the second win in eight games overall for St. Louis which has won five of six at home.
Despite a record that should have them nowhere near playoff contention, the 2006 World Series champions are only six games behind Central-leading Milwaukee, which has lost 14 of 20. Held to three runs or fewer for the sixth time in eight games, the Cardinals recorded only their second one-run win since the All-Star break. In their previous 11 victories since the break, they had outscored the opposition 80-32. So its feast or famine for the redbirds.
The Padres have every reason to expect another strong outing from their starter as major league ERA leader Chris Young takes the mound for the first time since July 24.
Young, who has been on the disabled list more than two weeks because of a strained oblique, has won five straight decisions since his last loss to St. Louis on May 12. He has held the opposition scoreless in seven of his last 10 starts, yielding one run in his last 22 innings. Getting one of the leagues best pitchers back should be a big boost for San Diego, which designated veteran David Wells for assignment on Wednesday to make room for the right-hander.
Although he lost his last start against the Cardinals 5-0 on May 12, Young only gave up one earned run in 5 1-3 innings. He is 0-1 with a 1.46 ERA in two career starts versus St. Louis.
Joel Pineiro hopes for better results when he makes his second start for the Cardinals. The right-hander, acquired from Boston on July 31, struggled in his first game with his new team, allowing five runs and seven hits in five innings Saturday in a 12-1 loss at Washington.
That was the first start of the season for Pineiro, who was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox. He was a 16-game winner in 2003 and won 14 games in 2002 for Seattle.
Pineiro is 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA in four starts against the Padres all with the Mariners.
I like the Padres tonight, and so should you.
Good luck with your action tonight!
