Quick Hits: College Tips & Picks
It’s the final week of the college football season and while all the focus is on the Championship games in the country’s biggest conferences, the place to make money this weekend is on the low-profile matchups that no-one is talking about.
While my 22-22-1 record with college picks is respectable, the goal here is to make money and I’ve got four picks to end the season on a high note.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane @ Central Florida Knights
These two teams played last month and UCF beat Tulsa 44-22 as slim 2 ½-point favorites. Taking last month’s game into consideration, it’s no wonder that 98% of the early action is on the Knights. UCF is 7-1 in Conference USA play this season, they enter the game on a six-game winning streak and they’ve covered four of the last six games.
Tulsa has won all five games since last month’s loss to UCF but the Hurricane have covered the spread just twice in the past 10 games. If the Hurricane are to have success, they’ll need a big outing from quarterback Paul Smith. The senior quarterback has thrown for 4,327 yards and 39 touchdowns in 12 games this season.
Prediction: Central Florida -7
Army Black Knights @ Navy Midshipmen
Stating that Navy owns Army in this series is an understatement. Navy has won the last six meetings straight up and the only blemish against the spread came last year when Army covered as 19-point underdogs. Navy enters this year’s game as 14-point favorites due to their 7-4 straight up record this season.
Army is just 3-8 straight up this season but the Black Knights have had better success covering the spread. Army is 4-5-1 ATS this year and last year’s ATS win over Navy was just the third time in the last decade that they’ve covered against the Midshipmen. Army’s recent woes have 92% of bettors backing Navy but I’m betting the opposite.
Prediction: Army +14
Virginia Tech Hokies @ Boston College Eagles
Virginia Tech might’ve lost to the Boston College Eagles already this year but that hasn’t kept bettors from backing the Hokies for this weekend’s rematch. Even with the Hokies listed as 5 ½-point favorites, 82% of the action is on Virginia Tech.
Boston College might not have ended the season with the same impressiveness that they started it with but they’re still an 8-2 team straight up and 6-5 against the spread. The Eagles have also beaten the Hokies straight up in three of the last four meetings and they’ve covered the spread in seven of the last nine games between these teams.
Prediction: Boston College +5
North Texas Mean Green @ Florida International Golden Panthers
It won’t quite be a titanic collision when these two Sun Belt teams meet but there’s a lot at stake in this matchup. With 11 losses in the books so far, Florida International is facing the very real prospect that they could go a second-straight season without a victory. You have to go back to December 3rd, 2005 to find the last time Florida International won a game. That was a victory over Middle Tennessee State.
The good news for Florida International is that they play North Texas tough. The last two meetings between these teams have been decided by a field goal. At 2-9 overall, North Texas isn’t exactly making headlines either. Despite the poor records, both teams have had some success against the spread as North Texas is 5-5 ATS while Florida International is 4-7 ATS.
Prediction: Florida International + 2 ½
Enjoy the games and good luck,
Cras
