Quick Hits: College Tips & Picks
It’s not a good scene right now. This is not how the season is supposed to wind down.
The last two weeks are attempting to ruin an otherwise solid season of college picks. After starting 16-12, two subpar weeks have dropped my overall record to 17-19-1.
For the first time this season, the record dips below .500 but that stops this week with the following four winning picks.
BYU Cougars @ Wyoming Cowboys
Last year, quarterback John Beck led the BYU Cougars to a 55-7 win over Wyoming. Beck is no longer with the Cougars but at 7-2 overall, they still have a good team. BYU has also won six in a row straight up but has failed to cover the last three spreads.
Luckily for BYU, the Cowboys are 0-8 ATS in their last eight games in the month of November. And things might not be getting any better for Wyoming. After a strong 4-1 start to the season, the Cowboys have lost four of the last five straight up and have not covered a spread in the last seven games. Last weekend, the Utah Utes smoked the Cowboys 50-0 and while I don’t expect a huge blowout this weekend, I expect Cougars’ win by a couple of TDs.
Prediction: BYU -11
Penn State Nittany Lions @ Michigan State Spartans
Penn State heads to East Lansing having won five of their last six games straight up. In the series between the Nittany Lions and the Spartans, Penn State has won the last three meetings straight up and covered the spread in two of those contests.
Another disappointing Michigan State team ended a three-game losing streak with a straight up win over Purdue last weekend. It was the Spartans’ first win in four games and only the second win in the last seven games. Add to the fact that Michigan State is just 2-9 in their last 11 home games and you’ll have a tough time selling me on the Spartans.
Prediction: Penn State -2 ½
#6 West Virginia Mountaineers @ #22 Cincinnati Bearcats
West Virginia is an impressive 8-1 with quarterback Patrick White and running back Steve Slaton running all over opponents. The only blip on the radar for the West Virginia Mountaineers is a loss to South Florida and if the chips fall in the right places, the Mountaineers could still find themselves in the national title game.
Cincinnati has surprised a lot of teams this season as their 8-2 record indicates. Also surprising is the fact that the Bearcats have been one of the more profitable teams in football with a 7-2 ATS record as well. The one game where the Bearcats ran into problems was the game against Pittsburgh. The Panthers ran for 270 yards in that contest and won 24-17. You can bet the Mountaineers have reviewed those tapes.
Prediction: West Virginia -6 ½
#17 Boston College Eagles @ #15 Clemons Tigers
Since reaching the #2 ranking in the country, it’s been all downhill for Boston College. After squeaking out a victory against Virginia Tech three weeks ago, the wheels fell off the Boston College wagon and the Eagles lost the last two games straight up and ATS. Now, for only the second time this season, Boston College enters a game as an underdog.
Clemson, however, is on a tear, winning four in a row straight up and ATS. At 8-2 overall this season, the only two losses for Clemson have come against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Coincidentally, Boston College has gone on the road and beaten both of those teams. The Eagles have also covered the spread in each of the two meetings with Clemson since joining the ACC.
Prediction: Boston College +7 ½
Enjoy the games and good luck,
-Cras
