Quick Hits: College Tips & Picks
Another solid week of picks in the books after my second-straight 3-1 weekend last Saturday. For the season, the record improves to 16-12 and it’s going to get better come this Saturday.
Here’s what I like this week.
#21 Wisconsin Badgers @ #1 Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State has been at the top of the polls for three-straight weeks but the entire country is waiting for them to fall. Teams in the Top 10 have dropped like flies all season and the #1 ranking in the country has already been held by three different teams so far.
The Buckeyes’ defense has done a great job keeping opponents from scoring this season. In six of their games this season, opposing teams have been held to a touchdown or less, but the Wisconsin Badgers’ offense is one of the better units they will face this season. Wisconsin has put up 77 points in their last two games and should keep this game close.
Prediction: Wisconsin + 15 ½
#24 Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ #23 Virginia Cavaliers
With running back Cedric Peerman missing his third-straight game last weekend, the then #15 Virginia Cavaliers lost 29-24 to N.C. State. Peerman, who was the focal point of the offense before he got injured, rushed for over 125 yards in three of the six games he played this season. He’s listed as questionable for Saturday’s game and Virginia will be hard-pressed to win without him.
The magnetic pull of Wake Forest hits again. The Demon Deacons, listed as a pick’em for this contest, have improved each week since quarterback Riley Skinner returned from injury. Wake destroyed North Carolina, 37-10 as 5 ½-point favorites last weekend and have won four of their last five games this season ATS.
Prediction: Wake Forest pick’em
Purdue Boilermakers @ Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State has won the last three meetings with Purdue against the spread and they’re on a 7-1 ATS run in this matchup. After losing 37-17 to Ohio State last weekend, the books listed the Nittany Lions as touchdown favorites for this weekend’s game.
Purdue enters this contest with a 7-2 record; the two losses coming against teams that Penn State also lost to. The Boilermakers enter this matchup with an edge in the passing game. Quarterback Curtis Painter has thrown for 570 more yards than Penn State QB Anthony Morelli. Purdue is 8-1 in their last nine games in November but the public doesn’t seem to be onboard as 71% are backing Penn State.
Prediction: Purdue +7
Texas A&M Aggies @ #6 Oklahoma Sooners
Texas A&M heads to Norman, Oklahoma after a loss to Kansas and must now face one of the top-ranked teams in the country. Things haven’t been rosy in the Aggies camp as the team already has three losses and enters this weekend’s matchup as a big 21-point underdog. The good news for Aggies backers is that Texas A&M has covered the spread in each of the last three meetings against Oklahoma.
Being led by freshman quarterback Sam Bradford, Oklahoma surprised a lot of teams early in the season and blew out opponents with lopsided scores. The books responded, making Oklahoma heavy favorites to bait buyers and it worked. Oklahoma was a 30 ½-point favorite in its last game against Iowa State, but won by only 10. The Sooners haven’t covered the spread in the last four outings but the public is still backing them with 68% of betters laying money on the Sooners so far this week.
Prediction: Texas A&M +21
Enjoy the games and good luck,
-Cras
