The NFL Double Take
The big Divisional Playoff weekend is marked with big spreads as no game has a spread under a touchdown.
So, what our guys think of matchups?
Seattle Seahawks @ Green Bay Packers
Mike: The Packers come into this game after a great regular season, but they are green with playoff experience and will be counting on a lot of young players. Seattle, on the other hand, has played six playoff games the last three years. The Seahawks do need to stick with the run in this game even if it fails early. They also can’t let up if they have a lead like they did last week against Washington. That said, I think Seattle has a decent chance to win this game, I’m talking the points.
Prediction: Seahawks +8
Cras: Don’t let the final score fool you; Seattle got all they could handle last week. Now, how much trouble will they give the rested Green Bay Packers? I won’t lie. With the huge spreads on the board this week, everything is screaming underdog to me. Seattle’s defense played tough last week but Washington quarterback Todd Collins helped them out. I’m only taking one home favorite this week and this is it.
Prediction: Packers -8
Jacksonville Jaguars @ New England Patriots
Mike: New England wants to spread out the Jacksonville defense with four and five receiver sets. The Jaguars need to run the ball early to chew up the clock and keep Tom Brady and company on the sideline. The weather looks to be favorable on Saturday night which favors the Patriots passing attack. However, New England seems to be worn down some from their 16-0 march, and Jacksonville has enough of a running game to keep this game respectable.
Prediction: Jaguars +13
Cras: The Jacksonville Jaguars are a big underdog despite the fact many believe they can beat the Patriots. To win, Jacksonville needs to deliver a heavy dose of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew and hope they don’t get behind early in the game. If the Jaguars fall behind, quarterback David Garrard proved last week that he is prone to mistakes, despite only being intercepted three times in the regular season. I’m not buying the Jaguars’ victory but I will buy the points.
Prediction: Jaguars +13
San Diego Chargers @ Indianapolis Colts
Mike: Indianapolis has flown under the radar due to New England’s success, but this team is championship caliber especially with receiver Marvin Harrison likely returning to the lineup. The Chargers took care of business at home last week by beating Tennessee, but now they must play on the road against a far superior team. I believe the Colts’ speed on defense will allow them to contain LaDainian Tomlinson, and quarterback Philip Rivers just isn’t good enough to get the job done again. I’m looking at a blowout.
Prediction: Indianapolis – 8 ½
Cras: How does San Diego beat Indianapolis earlier this season and still end up as 8 ½-point underdogs? Sure, they deserve to get points, but Indy is giving a lot in what should be a tightly-contested game. The Chargers won the Week 10 meeting in San Diego, thanks to six interceptions by the defense. It’s unlikely they get those interceptions this weekend but the game should still be a close one if L.T. can get in gear.
Prediction: Chargers +8 ½
New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys
Mike: The Giants played a very solid game at Tampa Bay last weekend, and they are not intimidated traveling to their division rival. For Dallas, wide receiver Terrell Owens should suit up but he will be less than 100%. The Cowboys’ offense has not been in sync for about a month, and it remains to be seen if they can ‘turn on the faucet’. This should be a close game either way, and it wouldn’t shock me to see New York pull off the major upset.
Prediction: Giants +7 ½
Cras: News out of Dallas is that Terrell Owens will be limited by his high ankle sprain in the weekend’s game against the Giants, if he even plays. That’s big cause for concern for a Dallas team that stumbled down the stretch. Add the fact that quarterback Tony Romo is struggling, and spent the bye-week in Mexico with Jessica Simpson and the Cowboys could be in for a quick exit. The good news for Dallas is that they are facing Eli Manning, who has had two solid outings in a row and there’s no way he can have a third, is there? That said, unless the Dallas defense takes a few back to the house, it should be a close one.
Prediction: Giants +7 ½
