NASCAR: Daytona 500 Betting + Odds
The green flag on the 2008 NASCAR season drops with the running of the 50th Daytona 500. If Speedweeks’ results are any indication, it looks like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. could be the man to beat. Oddsmakers agree, listing him as the 4-1 favorite .
You can get in on some of the purse being offered by Sportsbook.com by taking advantage of the driver props and race matchups offered for this and every race in the 2008 NASCAR season!
Junior has a history of success at Daytona including two point series wins and six Top 5 finishes. He is now driving for Hendrick Motorsports, NASCAR’s dominant team, and that makes him even more of a legitimate threat to win. However, his biggest competition figures to come from his teammates. Defending series champion Jimmie Johnson (5-1) will start on the pole and Jeff Gordon (9-2) has been the sport’s best driver on restrictor plate tracks.
Ironically, for as big as this race is every year, the restrictor-plate factor makes it unusual that the series’ best drivers win the event. It seems that in 200 laps of Daytona racing, nearly anything can happen. D.I.S. is one of the NASCAR circuit’s biggest at 2-1/2 miles around, and with 31-degree bankings in the turns, it’s easy to see how the action becomes so exhilarating. There is little that compares to the freight train like roar of the cars flying around the oval. Because of the restrictor plates, the speeds are a bit slower now than many years ago, but the cars tend to get packed together, giving the resemblance of rush hour traffic on a late Los Angeles afternoon. As such, a mistake by any driver in the pack can result in the “big one”, a major wreck that can dramatically impact the results of the race. The subject of the “big one” has gained more and more notoriety as the practice of “bump drafting” has elevated in recent years.
Last year’s Daytona 500 was one of NASCAR’s most exciting races ever, and served as an example of just how difficult it is to handicap. Much of the final race result was decided on the final turn of the 200th lap, when a melee opened the door for Kevin Harvick to fly around the outside of Mark Martin and take the checkered flag.
In terms of statistics at Daytona , Clint Bowyer owns the best average finish of any driver with multiple starts at 10.3, but he has only four races here to his credit. Otherwise, it’s Johnson heading the list at 12.0. In fact, his average is the best of any driver during the modern era with at least five starts here. The active driver honors for most Daytona wins goes to Gordon, who has six, including the 2005 season opener. Following on that short list are Dale Jarrett and Bill Elliott with four wins, and both Sterling Marlin & Michael Waltrip, with three each. Don’t forget about Stewart though, as he has two Pepsi 400 checkered flags along with three Bud Shootout triumphs. Of course, Earnhardt Jr. has commanded respect with his Speedweeks domination.
Barring any “big one”, there are 6-10 drivers that are prolific restrictor plate drivers known for running at the front of the field. That group would include the Hendrick threesome, Stewart, the Busch Brothers, Harvick, Jamie McMurray, and Martin Truex. In that same sense, a couple of dark horses could be David Gilliland and Waltrip.
The 500-mile event, which culminates the two weeks of Speedweeks festivities, is set for 3:15 PM ET on the 17th.
