NCAA Basketball Betting – Santa Clara at San Francisco
Our Sportsbooks: The San Francisco Dons (5-14 SU, 8-8 ATS), the alma mater of former NBA MVP Bill Russell, will take another shot at reaching an historic milestone for their coach on Monday night when they play host to the Santa Clara Broncos (10-9 SU, 8-9 ATS), the alma mater of former NBA MVP Steve Nash, in a West Coast Conference game that tips off at 10 PM ET from the War memorial Gymnasium.
In the Top Sportsbooks NCAA basketball betting odds, San Francisco is listed as a one-point favorite, with the total posted at 124 points.
Here are some of the NCAAB betting trends relative to this matchup:
* SC has covered three straight games
* SC has covered three of its last nine games
* SC has played five of its last six games UNDER the total
* SC has lost its last four road games SU
* SC is 3-1 ATS in conference play
* SF has lost nine of its last ten games SU
* SF has covered three of its last four games
* SF has played five straight games UNDER the total
* SF has covered two of its six home games this season
* SC has covered five of the last six meetings
* SC has won four of the last five meetings SU
* SC has had the rebounding edge in four of the last five meetings
Eddie Sutton, who has had so much success at programs like Oklahoma State and Kentucky, is sitting at 799 wins. There is nothing more his Dons would like than for him to attain #800 at home. This is their third try at it, and the Dons were turned back against national powers Gonzaga and St. Mary’s in the last week.
Santa Clara swept last season’s series by scores of 61-58 and 74-62. The Broncos bring size to the table in a major way, with conference player of the year candidate Josh Bryant (17.3 ppg, 9.2 rpg), a 6’10” center who is hard to stop.
Dior Lowhorn, the transfer from Texas Tech, has been a good find for USF, as he leads the team in both scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounds (7.4 rpg). He’s shooting 49% from the field, but no other member of the regular rotation is hitting with more than 45% accuracy. And three-point threats are few and far between.
Santa Clara has been on something of a roller-coaster ride lately. The Broncos scored just 45 points against St. Mary’s on January 12, shooting just 31%. They came back a week later to hold Loyola Marymount to just 15 points in the second half and 35 for the game, then two days after that, they scored 101 against Pepperdine on 67% from the field. Last time out, they lost 53-51 to San Diego.
Talk about low-scoring games – Sutton, who took over the coaching reins on December 26, has slowed down the tempo at San Francisco as necessary. Since he’s taken over, USF has played all of its games under the total, averaging 57 points a game. Unfortunately for Sutton, the defensive style employed by Ben Howland disciple Kerry Keating at Santa Clara may have real “lockdown” capabilities against his crew of shooters. Interestingly enough, Santa Clara also allows 24 rebounds per game by opponents when they play on the road, and that figure is the best in all of Division I.
Lowhorn’s a standout, but Bryant is the best player on the floor. Santa Clara will welcome the slower tempo, and will grind offensively-challenged USF down. We’ll go with Santa Clara, the one-point underdog in the Top Sportsbooks NCAA basketball betting odds.
