Golf Betting – Woods, Mickelson Lead Match Play Field
Phil Mickelson is coming off a win in the Northern Trust Open, so if you did any golf betting on him last week you probably have a bit of extra cash right now. So, will you invest that cash in Lefty or rival Tiger Woods for this week’s Match Play Championship?
Mickelson won by two strokes over Jeff Quinney in last week’s PGA event at Riviera Country Club, shooting a 12-under 272 for the tourney. Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald were third at 7-under, followed by Ryuji Imada and Scott Verplank at 6-under. Robert Allenby, K.J. Choi, J.B. Holmes, and Stuart Appleby tied for seventh at 5-under.
The Northern Trust Open field, though, didn’t include Woods, but the world’s top-ranked player will get back in action this week as a No. 1 seed in the annual WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Woods won this tournament in both 2003 and 2004, but he’s been knocked out in each of the past three years. Still, he’s pegged as the +250 favorite.
Mickelson is behind him on the odds list at +1200, and Lefty is the top seed in the Gary Player bracket of the tournament. With Woods sitting atop the Bobby Jones bracket on the other side of the field, it’s possible that those two could meet in the championship match. Ernie Els (+1800) is atop the Ben Hogan bracket, and he has to go through Woods to reach the final. Steve Stricker (+2800) sits on top of the Sam Snead bracket.
Adam Scott, the No. 2 seed in the Ben Hogan bracket, is currently third on the odds list for the tournament at +1400. Harrington (No. 3 in the Sam Snead bracket) is pegged at +2000 odds, while Henrik Stenson (No. 4 in the Ben Hogan bracket) is listed at +2200 odds. Stenson is actually the defending champion at this event, as he beat Geoff Ogilvy in the final last year. Ogilvy (No. 4 in the Gary Player bracket), however, did beat Davis Love III in the final back in 2006; however, he’s listed well back at +6000 odds this week.
David Toms is also listed at +6000 to win the Match Play Championship this week, and he was the event winner in 2005 (beating Chris DiMarco in the final). Toms is the No. 13 seed in the Bobby Jones bracket, so he has to go through Woods to advance to the semi-final round. Stricker is the other defending champion in the field; he won in 2001.
