NBA All-Star Props 2008 – I Love Slam Dunks
I’ve been telling everyone around the office that my three favorite things in life are slam dunks, a good sammich and another item which I can not disclose to you in fear of the old lady losing her mind. Yes, they’re in the right order. A good slam dunk will throw me right out of my chair and through the ceiling. Or it’ll shock me so much that I’ll look like I’ve just been shot in the chest by a bullet filled with awesome.
With all that being said, the only thing I’m really excited for this weekend is the NBA Betting All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest. Sure it’s lost a lot of luster since the days of MJ and ‘Nique, but this year’s crop of jammers is motivated to prove the crowd wrong. And this year, the legends of the dunk won’t be flashing their arrogance in the standings. The crowd will get to decide the next King of the Rim. So who will it be?
1) Dwight Howard (6’11, 265lbs) – Orlando Magic
The big man in the contest has incredible athletic ability considering his length. He wowed the crowd last year by posting a sticker of his smiling mug on the top of the backboard, while receiving a pass from Jameer Nelson that he turned in to a nice jam. But the judges weren’t impressed. And how could you be? He can virtually dunk by going up on his tippy-toes!
We love the dunk competition because it defies human logic. You know, like when Brent Barry won the competition by replicating Jordan’s masterful foul-line dunk…while wearing his warm-up sweater. Good gracious. It’s simply not awe-inspiring enough to see a guy of Dwight’s size dunk. He’s got flair and finesse, but the former first-overall will have to do something absolutely insane (like dunk it twice in one jump) to win this war.
2) Gerald Green (6-8, 200 lbs) – Minnesota Timberwolves
Oh right. Gerald Green plays basketball! I almost forgot considering that he averages 5.1 freaking points a game. Green probably spends more time rehearsing for this contest than practicing his free-throws. And who can blame him? He only gets 12.1 minutes a game. What else is he gonna do with his time? But this is the dunk contest, and we don’t care about stats! WE WANNA SEE JAMS!
Green is the betting favorite to win this weekend. Anyone who witnessed Green’s domination of the contest last year knows the kid has the hops and freakish athletic ability to repeat as champ. Green plans to unveil some magic this weekend, and he imaginative and athletic enough to flash some flair in the next stratosphere and repeat as champ. But…

3) Rudy Gay (6-9, 220 lbs) – Memphis Grizzlies
…Rudy Gay is in the building, ladies and gents! This will be Gay’s first attempt at achieving stardom in the Dunk Contest. If his in-game antics are enough to get your imagination wild with the possibilities of what Gay has to offer the comp, then there’s no way you aren’t excited to see him this weekend.
Gay can easily get above the rim and is ruthless when he crashes the lane with defenders crowding the paint. Think of what he can do when nobody’s in the way.
He’s a freak of an athlete with impressive leaping ability. The edge he has over Green is that we’ve never seen him in the competition before. So he has that “new girl” appeal to him as well. Gay will certainly be looking to put himself on the map this weekend and the Dunk Contest is the way to do it.
4) Jamario Moon (6-8, 205 lbs) – Toronto Raptors
Who? Exactly. Huh? Ok. Jamario Moon reputed out of nowhere this year as a ROY of the candidate. So who exactly is he? He’s a bench player for the Raptors, who hopes to bring Toronto their second Dunk Champion since Vince Carter put together the greatest dunk reel from any single night by one man.
The thing I like about Moon is that everyone is talking about Dwight wanting to jack up the rim to 12 feet, Green trash talking Rudy Gay and Gay responding by posting highlights every night. Moon has been virtually silent during the hype machine created by his three opponents. All Moon needs to do is throw down one monster in his opening dunk to steal the crowd immediately. He’s the Great Unknown of the competition. And by the end of the competition, we will all know who he is.
