MLB Baseball Futures Betting – NL East Wagering
BetUS Sportsbook has baseball betting odds up on who will win each of Major League Baseball’s six divisional races, and in the NL East the Phillies have finally risen to the top, although the Florida Marlins are being stingy about going away. The Mets have been in a funk for most of the season. Will this high-priced bunch start to achieve?
Let’s take a look at the MLB Divisional Odds as they are currently posted at Our Sportsbooks:
BetUS MLB Futures Odds
To win National League East
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES -190
NEW YORK METS +350
FLORIDA MARLINS +400
ATLANTA BRAVES +600
WASHINGTON NATIONALS +10000
The PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (-190 in BetUS odds) seem to have started taking a little more control of things, having won 12 out of 15 games. One of the reasons Chase Utley established himself as an MVP candidate is that he was able to help carry this team in the early going when others weren’t hitting. He’s got 21 homers and is near the league lead in RBI’s. Ryan Howard, after a very slow start, is beginning to produce runs with a lot more consistency. He had three doubles in one game on Sunday.

Shane Victorino recently went through a period of 20 games where he hit .370. Closer Brad Lidge has been close to unhittable (0.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP), and he is challenging for the NL lead in saves. But in moving ahead, this team will have to offer Cole Hamels (6-4, 3.36 ERA) a little more help in the rotation. Jamie Moyer is fine, but if that 45-year-old is the #2 starter you are not going to blow away the competition en route to a division title.

After manager Willie Randolph got a reprieve from management, the NEW YORK METS (+350 in BetUS odds) went on a short spurt. But as of Tuesday’s action they lost five games in a row, and that has put Randolph back on the hot seat. There might be some reason for optimism. But Pedro Martinez, who allowed 10 hits in five innings the other day, must start to show some form, and El Duque Hernandez needs to come back to the rotation. Johan Santana (7-4, 3.08 ERA) has been good, but he hasn’t been dominant. Moises Alou could be coming back on a regular basis. Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and David Wright all could be hitting more. The Mets would seem too talented not to make a move at some point. But it’s getting late for that. Catcher Ramon Castro overslept and made it to the park too late to play on Sunday. But he’s not the only one who needs a wakeup call.
The FLORIDA MARLINS (+400 in BetUS odds) are producing enough offense; the team now has more home runs than anyone in the majors (98, as of Tuesday’s games). Hanley Ramirez had a slow month of May, but when put back to the leadoff spot in the lineup, he started hitting again, and he’s climbed over the .300 mark. Dan Uggla would be the second baseman everybody would be talking about, if not for Chase Utley. He carried this team at one point, and leads the homer parade with 18. Third baseman Jorge Cantu, who was acquired from Tampa Bay, has been red-hot of late. Luis Gonzalez has done a nice job filling in for Josh Willingham. Even Cody Ross, whose hit a lot of homers lately, got his average “up” to .230. But there is a legitimate question as to whether the pitching is going to hold up over the full season. Right now Scott Olsen is the only member of the regular rotation with an ERA under 4.63. They hope Ryan Tucker, just up from Double-A and a winner on Sunday against Cincinnati, might be of some help there.
The ATLANTA BRAVES (+600 in BetUS odds) have been slumping. Part of the reason, obviously, is that they can’t win on the road (7-22 after Tuesday’s action). By contrast, a team like Philadelphia is 18-14 away from home. Chipper Jones is hitting .420 to lead the majors, and had 92 hits in 59 games. He will miss a game or two with a right quadriceps injury, but it’s not considered serious. Good thing, because without him, the Braves would be seriously hurting for some offense. Tim Hudson and Jair Jurrjens have been more than good enough in the rotation, but John Smoltz, who recently had shoulder surgery, may never pitch again. That’s why it is hoped that Jorge Campillo (2-0, 2.17 ERA) can continue to pitch well, because he may be the pivotal guy in the rotation. There is some upside with this team, and they shouldn’t be counted totally out of it, but there are also a lot of questions. The Braves were swept by the Phillies over the past weekend, and the ten-game road trip started badly with a loss to the Cubs.
The WASHINGTON NATIONALS (+10000 in BetUS odds) are a non-starter, and they’ll be a non-finisher.
