MLB Baseball Betting Odds – Veteran Pitchers Get Job Done
Who says pitching is a young man’s game? The following six veteran hurlers have been getting the job done for baseball betting fans so far this year, and could pay off for those doing any MLB betting:
Randy Johnson – Arizona Diamondbacks
Probable Next Start: Monday vs. Pittsburgh
The veteran lefthander is still striking out batters at a high rate (64 over 58 innings), and he’s allowed four or fewer earned runs in nine of 10 starts so far this year. Johnson has had some hard luck lately – he’s 0-1 with two no-decisions in his last three starts despite allowing just seven runs – but overall he’s been giving Arizona a chance to win.
Mike Mussina – New York Yankees
Probable Next Start: Monday vs. Kansas City
The Yankees haven’t played up to expectations so far this season, but Mussina is still enjoying a nice bounceback campaign. After going just 11-10 with a 5.15 ERA in 2007, the righthander is 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA through two months of 2008. Mussina has picked up the win in eight of his last nine outings, losing only to his former team – the Orioles.
Tom Glavine – Atlanta Braves
Probable Next Start: Tuesday vs. Chicago Cubs
Glavine has just two wins on the season, but he’s also been stuck with no-decisions six times when he’s pitched well. And while the lefthander’s ERA is at 4.47 through two months, he’s only given up more than two earned runs in three of his 11 outings. Glavine should be able to improve on that win total once the Braves start scoring for him.
Greg Maddux – San Diego Padres
Probable Next Start: Tuesday vs. L.A. Dodgers
With Jake Peavy and Chris Young both sidelined, Maddux has been forced into the ace role for the Padres – and he’s responded with four strong starts in row. In fact, the righthander has allowed just six earned runs in 23 1-3 innings over his last four starts.

The Padres won all four of those contests, although Maddux got stuck with no-decisions.

Jamie Moyer – Philadelphia Phillies
Probable Next Start: Thursday vs. Florida
Moyer doesn’t have the greatest ERA right now (4.56), but he has managed to earn the victory in five of his last seven outings. Helping the lefthander immensely – the Phillies scored 10 or more runs in four of those games. Still, Moyer pitched well in his last start (two earned runs over 5 1-3 innings against Atlanta), and ended up with a no-decision.
Jose Contreras – Chicago White Sox
Probable Next Start: Tuesday vs. Detroit
Getting a hit off Contreras this season has been no easy task – the veteran lefthander has a 1.04 WHIP to go along with his 2.76 ERA. Contreras hasn’t been tagged with a loss since May 4, and the White Sox are 8-4 in games he has started so far this season. In his last six outings Contreras has limited the opposition to two or fewer earned runs.
The New York Mets are hoping that veteran hurler Pedro Martinez can stay healthy and be productive for them over the summer, while the Boston Red Sox are hoping that the experienced Bartolo Colon can continue his early success in his comeback bid with the team. As well, the St. Louis Cardinals have former ace Chris Carpenter throwing again, and if a rehab assignment goes well he could return to help the team later in the year.
