NCAA Football Betting – Meineke Car Care Bowl
Dec. 29 — Meineke Bowl Preview Charlotte, N.C., Connecticut (9-3) vs. Wake Forest (8-4), 1 p.m. (ESPN)
LAST POINTSPREAD RESULT: U-Conn went to Morgantown and lost a 66-21 decision to West Virginia as a 21-point dog, giving up 624 total yards. Wake Forest visited Vanderbilt and came away with a 31-17 win as a two-point underdog.
LAST MEETING: These teams met last season. Wake Forest won 24-13 as a six-point road underdog. The Deacons managed only 209 total yards on offense, but took advantage of three U-Conn turnovers.
ABOUT CONNECTICUT:
The Good News — The Huskies defense permitted 19 points or less to the opposition in ten of the 12 games this team played in 2007. U-Conn registered a +12 turnover margin on the season. The rushing attack has been a strength, as running backs Donald Brown and Andre Dixon have combined for 1558 yards rushing.
The Bad News — U-Conn has faltered badly when facing high-level opposition away from home, losing to Cincinnati and West Virginia by a combined 93-24 score and being outgained by a combined 448 yards.
U-CONN TRENDS:
* U-CONN has covered seven of its last nine games
* U-CONN has played five UNDERS in its last seven games
* U-CONN is 4-2 ATS as an underdog this season
ABOUT WAKE FOREST:
The Good News — Wake Forest won eight of its last ten games. One of the reasons was outstanding wide receiver Kenneth Moore, who caught 87 passes. And between the defensive and special teams units, there were ten touchdowns scored. The Deacons posted a +12 turnover margin. And QB Riley Skinner has completed 72% of his passes.
The Bad News — Defending against enemy air attacks has been a notable problem, as Wake Forest allowed 242 passing yards per game this season. That ranks them 78th in the country. Skinner had 11 TD passes against 12 interceptions.
WAKE FOREST TRENDS:
* WF is 21-10-1 ATS in its last 31 games
* WF has covered six of its last seven games
* WF covered five of eight games as a favorite this year
* WF has played seven OVERS in its last nine games
THE BOTTOM LINE: There is a lot to be proud of if you;re a U-Conn fan. But those performances against West Virginia and Cincinnati are a little disconcerting. Not that Wake Forest is necessarily built to pull away like that, but the Deacons come into this game with high-level bowl experience (the Orange Bowl last season) and a squad that is a threat to score, even if the offense is not on the field. There is no way coach Jim Grobe will have this team unprepared and caught with its pants down. Sure, Wake has had some problems against talented quarterbacks, but we can’t say that Husky signal-caller Tyler Lorenzen (57%) and coach Randy Edsall’s conservative offense is all that equipped to exploit that weakness. We’ll take the ACC entry, Wake Forest, the 2.5-point favorite in the Top Sportsbooks NCAA football betting odds.
