There is going to be a possible letdown for Cincinnati following the resounding win over West Virginia at Morgantown, a game where the Mountaineers were held to just TWENTY percent shooting. But one perhaps should look at it as further confirmation that the youngsters in Mick Cronin’s program are catching on to what he is preaching. Cronin kept some of the Bob Huggins philosophies before his mentor went to WVU, and one of them was to try and lock down on top scorers from the opposing team. Cincy has looked like a tournament level team in wins over West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Syracuse and Louisville, and now the competitive effort early in the season against Xavier in the Crosstown Shootout makes some sense.
Meanwhile, marquette is nosediving against the number. The Eagles, capable of blowing out teams like Notre Dame at home, vaulted themselves into the rankings off a soft schedule, but lately have been beaten by double digits by the likes of WVU, Louisville and U-Conn, and have covered only one game in the last seven.
Worse yet, they have struggled from the field, exceeding 40% in only one of their last four outings.
