They meet in Oakland tonight and the only reason for the point spread to favor the Warriors is because the Magic are coming into the last game of a 5 game road trip. During the road trip, the Magic have certainly proven their mettle by beating the Lakers and losing to the Suns by only four points on 11/30.
The Warriors have been a roll. They’ve won six straight games and have done so in style. During the six game run, the Warriors have beaten the Suns and Rockets at home and the Washington Wizards on the road.
It’s important, then, to take a peek at a few trends before deciding on the winner, against the spread, in this game:
The Golden State Warriors are 6 and 14 against the spread in their last 20 versus teams from the NBA Southeast.
The Orlando Magic are 23-5-2 against the spread in their last 30 overall games.
The Orlando Magic are also 11 and 1 against the spread on the road so far this year.
Continuing a six game winning streak against one of the top teams in the NBA won’t be easy for the Warriors. The Magic may be tired after their late game versus the Lakers, but as evidenced by the trends, they are an excellent road team. Excellent road teams, in NBA bettors mind’s, usually go about 60% to 70% against the spread away from home. The Magic are squashing those numbers.
The main question in this game is when will the Magic come back down to earth and show a more reasonable against the spread percentage on the road? If you think it happens tonight, then the obvious play is the Golden State Warriors. If you think it will happen later in the season, then take the Magic.
I believe that the Magic have enough in the tank to win this game outright. The Warriors are also coming off of a win up in Seattle, their sixth straight, and that makes them a tough proposition in this one.
NBA teams can definitely rack up 7 to 15 straight wins in a row, but the Warriors don’t strike me as that type of team. They’re more likely to hit the wall then the Magic are tonight.
The line is Orlando Magic + 2.5 against the spread on the road versus the Golden State Warriors.
