2016 NHL Hockey Stanley Cup Finals Lines
Looking for 2016 Stanley Cup Futures Odds and some great NHL betting lines to get down on? A snoozer of an NHL Trade Deadline is in the books – some teams dramatically improved themselves while others largely stood pat.
Handicapping 2016 Stanley Cup Finals Futures Odds
Vegas has already altered their Stanley Cup Futures odds and after taking into account the “flurry” of activity around the Trade Deadline the Caps and the Hawks remain betting favorites to win it all – rightfully so.
Is there some value further down the list? Let’s take a look.
Washington Capitals +450
The Capitals have been the best team in the NHL all season long – the drop off that many had been predicting simply has not come. The Caps have the best offensive team (3.32 goals per game), the second-best defense (2.19 goals-against per game) and the best goalie in Braden Holtby.
The team made a few tweaks at the trade deadline but nothing compared to the teams that will also vie for Lord Stanley’s Cup
They are an easy choice to come out of the East – my issue is their lack of Stanley Cup Final experience – the pinnacle of the NHL season is a different ball game that I’m not sure the Caps are quite ready for.
Chicago Blackhawks +500
Here we go again! The Chicago Blackhawks are once again one of the betting favorites to win their fourth Stanley Cup in seven years.
The Blackhawks added Tim Jackman, Tomas Fleischmann, Dale Weise, Christian Ehrhoff, Matt Fraser, Jay Harrison, and Andrew Ladd at the deadline to join the best player in the NHL this season Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Corey Crawford who is having his best season as a pro between the pipes.
The Hawks would have been a popular bet to win it all even without the additions at the deadline. They are a better team now and my pick to win it all. Talent and immense playoff experience make it an easy choice.
Dallas Stars +1000
The Dallas Stars have shown cracks as of late – they have gone 3-5-2 in their last 10 games and have lost four straight as we head into the first week of March. Their offense has been impressive all year-long but their middling defensive play is certainly concerning.
Kris Russell was a nice addition at the trade deadline but my guess is that it won’t be enough. We all know that strong defensive play is essential in the Stanley Cup playoffs – the Stars are a scary bet because of that.
Los Angeles Kings +1100
The Kings have also floundered as March begins. They are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. That said the Kings have a knack of rising to the occasion in the playoffs – their size, speed, skill and defensive play should result in yet another long playoff run this year.
The Kings picked up Kris Versteeg at the deadline – unflattering compared to the teams they will be chasing. The Kings are still a serious threat – my problem is that they may not even be the best team in California right now.
Anaheim Ducks +1100
In my opinion the best team in California is the Anaheim Ducks who have erased a brutal start to the season and have been playing lights out as we head into the final quarter of the season. As of March 1, they are on a 9-0-1 clip – the hottest team in the game.
Anaheim added Brandon Pirri from the Florida Panthers and Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline – quality additions to a team that was a favorite when the season started.
To me the Ducks are the best value on the board and the biggest threat to the Blackhawks in the Western Conference.
Tampa Bay Lightning +1200
The Lightning are also decent value. After all they are largely the same team that represented the East in the Stanley Cup Final last year.
Steven Stamkos is an absolutely elite talent, Ben Bishop is a huge, potential difference making goaltender and the team is stacked with players that haven’t peaked yet this season.
I just wish the Lightning would have made a move or two at the deadline to bolster the lineup – keeping Jonathan Drouin could end up costing this team.
St. Louis Blues +1400
The Blues have had the makeup of a serious contender for years now – size, grit, coaching and defense. But their lack of playoff success is a serious red flag to me.
Add in the fact that they were unable to make any serious moves at the trade deadline and the Blues look like a team that may be looking toward next season… again.
New York Rangers +1400
The Rangers added Eric Staal which makes their team better for sure and they still have some guy named Henrik Lundqvist patrolling the crease. They still sit fifth in the NHL overall standings but something tells me that 2016 just isn’t their year.
Florida Panthers +1600
The Panthers have been the nicest surprise in the NHL this season and they added forwards Jiri Hudler and Teddy Purcell as well as defenseman Jakub Kindl at the trade deadline. They own the NHL’s best goals-against average (2.18) and have Roberto Luongo playing extremely well between the pipes.
The problem is that the Panthers are a team that has made the playoffs just once in 14 seasons. I, like many, am a firm believer that only the teams that have had recent success in the Stanley Cup playoffs are the biggest threats.
Florida just isn’t one of those teams.
Pittsburgh Penguins +2000
Too much money for too few players makes the Penguins too thin to keep up with the stacked, four line teams that they will have to navigate in order to win it all. I am not a believer in the least!
Detroit Red Wings +2500
Nobody is talking about the Wings and maybe that is the way they like it. The issue – they rank 20th with 2.47 goals per game.
Goaltender Petr Mrazek (18-9-4, .932 save percentage) has been good and could carry the Wings a ways in the playoffs but I don’t think he makes them a serious contender.
I just don’t like their 2016 Stanley Cup Futures Odds
- San Jose Sharks +1400
- New York Islanders +2000
