UFC 204: Bisping vs. Henderson 2
Date: October 8, 2016
Location: Manchester Arena, Manchester, United Kingdom
Broadcast: PPV, Fox Sports 1, UFC Fight Pass
UFC 204: Bisping vs. Henderson Card:
UFC 204 Picks: UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping (30-7) -225 vs. Dan Henderson (32-14): +175
In July 2009, Dan Henderson settled his TUF Nations vitriol with Michael Bisping by obliterating the Brit with a perfectly placed “H-Bomb.” Afterwards, the raucous mob occupying the Mandalay Bay Casino roared in appreciation of Bisping’s misfortune.
However, since that fateful date, Bisping’s career has reached an unexpected pinnacle as Henderson’s “Cinderella Man” tale has neared midnight.
Henderson, now 46, has been halted in four of his past seven bouts. Meanwhile, Bisping has won five of six, recently avenging a 2014 loss to usurp the Middleweight Championship from Luke Rockhold.
While Henderson’s legendary status is iron-clad, the validity of the Temecula California native’s title shot is anything but.
Though Henderson put slumping Hector Lombard to sleep at UFC 199, a repeat of his UFC 100 mastery is unlikely. In this headline encounter, look for the younger, sturdier Bisping to avenge his defeat to Henderson via 1st round K.O.
MMA Betting Pick: Michael Bisping, Stoppage
UFC 204 Picks: Vitor Belfort (25-12): +225 vs. Gegard Mousasi (25-4): -290
Vitor Belfort has enjoyed a long, winding professional path since his 1997 UFC debut.
In that span, Belfort has captured the MMA universe’s imagination — and UFC Light Heavyweight title — while competing in three different weight divisions. However, as is the case with fellow legend Henderson, all good things must eventually end.
That end will likely come in the form of solid Middleweight Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi. While Belfort’s late-career championship aspirations were violently halted by Jacare Souza and Chris Weidman, Mousasi has been on an impressive run.
In his last outing, Mousasi eviscerated Thiago Santos. Overall, the 31-year-old Dutch native has won four of five and two straight.
To the dismay of Vitor supporters, Mousasi should test Belfort’s now suspect chin, before sinking in a round-one submission.
MMA Betting Pick: Gegard Mousasi, Submission
UFC 204 Picks: Ovince St. Preux (19-8): -220 vs. Jimi Manuwa (30-7, 1 NC): +177
Fresh off a five-round battle with Jon Jones, the granite chin of #5 ranked Ovince St. Preux will receive a stern test from K.O. artist Jimi Manuwa.
“The poster boy” boasts an impressive knockout ratio of 13 stoppages in 15 wins. However, in the 36-year-old’s two defeats, top-tier light-heavyweights Alexander Gustafson and Anthony Johnson stopped Manuwa.
While St. Preux is a competitive notch below “Rumble” and “The Mauler,” opposite Manuwa, his skill-set and superior grappling should frustrate his one-dimensional opponent.
The former Tennessee Volunteer standout should use his superior range and strength to grind out a unanimous three-round decision against the UK native.
MMA Betting Pick: Ovince St. Preux -220
UFC 204 Picks: Stefan Struve (6-0): -110 vs. Daniel Omielanczuk (13-5-1): +175
Now 28, former rising star Stefan Struve will attempt to regain momentum vs. prolific submission grappler and late replacement Daniel Omielanczuk.
Not to be discounted, Struve has a great submission game as well, painfully forcing 16 of his 27 victims to tap. At 7’0 and 265 lbs, “The Skyscraper” enjoys a massive height, reach and weight advantage.
However, the major area in which Struve outshines Omielanczuk is knockout power.
The towering Netherlands native has garnered eight concussive stoppages compared to Omielanczuk’s three.
Though Struve is the superior all-around fighter, of late his chin has betrayed him. Since winning four consecutive Octagon appearances — culminating with a victory over current UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic — Struve is 2-3, with two knockout loses.
Conversely, Omielanczuk has claimed three consecutive wins — albeit against lesser competition. In addition, the Dutchman’s last two contests could’ve gone either way.
Heavyweight bouts can end at a moment’s notice, that said, Struve should survive Omielanczuk via three-round split decision. Look for this bout to be fight of the night.
MMA Betting Pick: Stefan Struve -110
