Through two games of the group stage of Group A in the 2018 World Cup, the hosts have shown the world that we have underestimated them.
Russia will look to continue its sparkling form (albeit against Saudi Arabia and Egypt; not world-beaters, but still) in the city of Samara, long the seat of the Soviet Space Program. The Russian pride should really be on display in this one.
Uruguay
The South Americans have already assured themselves a spot in the knock-out phase of the tournament, but they haven’t dazzled with their brightest form yet.
That being said, things started moving in the right direction in the previous game, with Barcelona star attacker Luis Suarez notching a goal. Still, considering the star power in the squad, La Celeste haven’t truly been on song.

Versatile forward Edinson Cavani can help fulfill his team’s potential. No one works harder in the country’s shirt, and though he’s had a couple of individual moments of brilliance, he hasn’t yet scored in the tournament. If Cavani comes to life, it will go far to establish Uruguay’s goal-scoring threat.
Uruguay has to also be confident they have the defenders – particularly the central defenders – to perhaps quiet a Russian attack that has been relentless thus far. Uruguay will need both its strengths working in tandem to muffle the tournament hosts, who are out to show everyone they are a force to be reckoned with.
Russia
Let’s get the caveat out of the way early: Group A is among the weakest groups in this World Cup. There, we’ve said it. We can now go on lauding this inspired effort from a Russian side that wasn’t expected to do much, even on home soil.
The Russians are out-scoring opponents 8-1 through the first two fixtures; they waxed a Saudi Arabian team that is out of its depth and they beat Egypt, a team that was favored, handily, 3-1.
Denis Cheryshev is scoring like he’s the second-coming of Cristiano Ronaldo, among the tourney leaders with four goals.
Artem Dzyuba is displaying that his excellent showings at previous World Cups are no fluke, as the Zenit-Saint Petersburg man is also getting on the score sheet. CSKA Moscow ‘keeper Igor Akinfeev has been in excellent form, with only world superstar Mo Salah of Egypt solving him to date.
Having said that, the hobbled Salah was the lone true world-class attacker that Russia has dealt with so far, while there could be a fistful of them in the Uruguayan side alone. It’s a stiffer challenge, at the very least.

Ultimately, Russia has acquitted itself very well and until the hosts show otherwise, they have to be considered a threat in this match, especially against an opponent that, although superior on paper and already cruised to the Round of 16, hasn’t reached the heights yet.
Free Uruguay vs. Russia World Cup Prediction:
My hyperbole hasn’t served me well so far, but I’m going to keep hitching my wagon to this Uruguay team.
Russia is playing out of its mind and it should be Uruguay’s toughest test, but one thinks that Uruguay will elevate its game in the hostile territory and with the world intent on watching the advancing teams from Group A.
The South Americans have the cohesive defense to cool down what has been a white-hot Russian attack. If Cavani and Suarez can get on the same wavelength in the same game, Uruguay will all of a sudden look that more menacing in attack.
Young studs like Rodrigo Betancur and Cristian Pavon could assert themselves at any moment. Russia has been an awesome story, ranked where they are internationally, but eventually Cinderella’s coach turns into a pumpkin, right?
4* Free World Cup Betting Pick: Uruguay to win
This all of a sudden is a really tough game to call, and most people would never have thought that before the World Cup started.
Russia has used a wellspring of national pride to inspire its play, and with the Cosmos Arena a short commute from Yuri Gagarin Park, the hosts are surely looking to continue to vault their form into orbit.
