The 2020 EURO was about to take place last year but the pandemic pushed the entire competition to this summer. The tournament will start on Friday, June 11th, when Italy will clash against Turkey, in the sole match of the opening day. The two teams have done a great job leading up to this tournament and they will both try to start their duties on a positive note.
Turkey did a pretty good job in the EURO Qualifiers, finishing at the 2nd spot of Group H with 7 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws, while scoring 18 goals and conceding just 3 in return. That was the best defence in the qualifiers. Cenk Tosun was their leading scorer with 5 goals, but he is injured and will miss out on this tournament.
They also started the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers in a great manner, beating the Netherlands by 4-2 and Norway by 3-0 before a 3-3 draw against Latvia. They are now sitting at the top of their group with 7 points, scoring 10 and conceding 5 goals.
Turkey have a solid roster with players who play in the best European competitions. They use a 4-1-4-1 formation with Lille’s Burak Yilmaz up front, who is coming off a great season in which he won the Ligue 1 title, along with teammates Yazici and Celik, who are both in the national team as well.
Other notable names are AC Milan’s midfielder Calhanoglu and a solid defence with players like Liverpool’s Kabak, Leicester’s Soyuncu and Juventus’ Demiral. Their performance in the 2020 EURO Qualifiers looked very promising, especially on the defensive end, and they will try to carry that momentum over to the Group Stage.
Italy were unstoppable in the 2020 EURO Qualifiers, winning all 10 matches and comfortably sitting at the top of the group with 37 goals scored and just 4 conceded. The pluralism in their offense was remarkable, with Torino’s Belotti scoring 5 goals and 10 other players scoring multiple goals as well.
Italy also did a good job in the Nations League, finishing at the top of Group 1 in League A with 3 wins and 3 draws in 6 matches, scoring 7 and conceding just 2 goals against Poland, the Netherlands and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Last but not least, Italy started the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers winning all 3 matches against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania. All three wins came by the exact same final score of 2-0 in favour of the Italians.
Coach Mancini has opted for a 4-3-3 formation that provides stability at the back, but also a nice flow of passes at the 3-man offense. It’s going to be Immobile and Belotti that will fight for the sole striker spot, with Chiesa and Insigne down both flanks. With 5 clean sheets in their last 5 competitive matches, Italy will be really hard to score against.
Turkey vs Italy Prediction:
Turkey had the best defence in the 2020 EURO Qualifiers, conceding just 3 goals in 10 matches. And the same can be said for Italy, who only conceded 4 goals in just as many matches. So, this should be a fairly tight match, with both teams looking to safeguard their defences first and foremost.
We expect Italy to have a leading role in this match, while Turkey will most likely give up possession and try to hit in the counter-attacks. The way these two play, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a Penalty Kick here.
But the best value lies in the Under 2.25 Goals here. It’s the opening match of the tournament, all eyes will be on these two teams and they have proven in recent years that they have very good defensive lines.
