Spain were stuck at a seemingly unexpected goal-less draw against Sweden in the opener and now need a win over Poland. Poland proved to be below expectations in the match against Slovakia, with Robert Lewandowski looking pretty invisible in that match.
Two teams that did not impress will lock horns on Saturday in what is going to be a nervy match.
Spain
Spain were actually not that bad in the opening match against Sweden, but they were unable to score despite their numerous attempts.
They created 17 scoring chances and had 5 shots on goal, but the opposing goalkeeper was in excellent shape.
They even had incredible amounts of ball possession in that match, with 79% in the first half and 71% in the second half, allowing their opponents to create just 4 scoring chances but with no shots on goal.
Spain did look solid in both ends of the pitch, but they lacked the effort to give them the three points. They will now look to beat Poland in an attempt to climb at the top of the group, after all Poland did lose to Slovakia and did not look very good overall.
Poland
Things started off in the wrong foot for Poland in this tournament, for multiple reasons.
They conceded an early goal in their match against Slovakia, when goalkeeper Szczesny scored an own goal after an unlucky bounce at the crossbar.
They did manage to pull back even at the start of the second half with Linetty, but Krychowiak saw his second yellow of the match at the 62nd minute, leaving Poland with 10 men at the pitch. Just 7 minutes later, Slovakia scored their second goal of the night which resulted in a 2-1 loss.
Poland looked really shaky in the defense, while their best weapon, Robert Lewandowski, was effectively neutralized by a not-so-great Slovakian defense. He did break the Bundesliga record for most goals in a single season, but that was with Bayern Munich players feeding him.
The gap in quality between Bayern Munich and Poland is just too big.
Spain vs. Poland Prediction:
Both teams were pretty unlucky in their respective matches, each for its own reasons. Spain created an awful lot of chances but they were up against a solid Swedish defense. They should have the leading role again versus Poland.
Poland looked really predictable in the first match, trying to feed Lewandowski as much as possible, but they were all neutralized. They need to make a better plan against Spain, because Spain will also try to contain Lewa.
Judging by what we saw in the first match, Poland don’t stand a chance unless they play as a team.
Even so, Spain have better units, better team and a better plan. Taking Spain with -1.5 here.
