Southampton were utterly humiliated by Manchester United mid-week losing 9-0, so it remains up in the air just how this team will react to that result, as they travel to St James’ Park for this match with Newcastle United on Saturday.
Southampton
If your able to look past that last game against ManU it has not been all that bad of a season for The Saints, as they have an 8-5-8 record which is good for 12th in the standings and with a good lead on the relegation spots it is not all bad news in the south of England.
Danny Ings has 7 goals from 16 appearances this season, which is not quite up to snuff for his high expectations, but last year went similarly for him, as he was able to really turn it on late in the season and I would not put it past him to have a similar turn around here in 2021.
The problem for Southamption in this game is that they had two players sent off in that game against United and so Alex Jankewitz and Jan Bednarek will both be unavailable for this match and those two guys represent the backbone of this team’s defense, so McCarthy in net might be busier than he is accustomed.
Newcastle
Newcastle, despite all of the offseason news, has not actually been very good on the field currently sitting just outside of the relegation zone on 22 points and they are not coming into this game with much momentum either dropping their last game to Crystal Palace 2-1. The biggest problem for Newcastle has been keeping the ball out of the net, as they have already conceded 36 times, and they do not exactly have a prolific offense to make up for that.
Newcastle do have Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser up-front though, so I can see them really churning in the goals to make up a bit for their defense, so there is some up-side with this team if they can get things figured out in the final third of the pitch.

Newcastle can’t really defend and neither can Southampton, so I was a bit surprised to see over 2.5 goals at +100 thinking that I would have to lay the juice on the over. For me, those odds are just too good to pass up on in a game which should be end to end and wide open.
