In the first match for these two squads, we’ll see a star-less Senegal take on a powerhouse Netherlands squad that has been on quite the run as of late.
Senegal
It was announced last week that Senegal’s all-time leading scorer and top player Sadio Mane is going miss this year’s World Cup due to a right leg injury. Without their top star, the African nation’s style will have to change in order to keep up with a country such as the Netherlands.
Mane was the main offensive driver for Senegal and without him, the country will have to lean on their defensive prowess to have any success at this years tournament. On the back-end, they are led by Chelsea center back Kalidou Koulibaly.
The 18th ranked nation conceded just twice on their run to an African Cup of Nations title earlier this year. While that is no small feat, the level of competition is nowhere close to what they will see in their group and in this match.
In an international friendly against 20th ranked Iran at the end of September we saw Senegal draw 1-1 but that was due to an Iran own goal.
There was much hope for the lone African nation in this year’s World Cup but one injury has now seen their odds for a point against the Netherlands go down considerably.
Netherlands
This will be the toughest competition for the Dutch in the group A competition that features Ecuador and host nation Qatar.
Through their past four fixtures versus teams outside the top 10 in world rankings, 8th ranked Netherlands had a 60.5% possession average. They never saw lower than 58% of the ball against any of those squads.
The country has seen their fortunes change on the international scene since the return of Louis Van Gaal as coach back in August of 2021. They haven’t lost since being knocked out of the round of 16 at the 2020 European Championship. Since then they have a record of 11 wins and 4 draws with three straight wins against Belgium, Poland and Wales.
Their greatest strength comes from their tight back end that conceded just 8 goals in 10 games during the World Cup qualifying phase. The Netherlands also won Nations League Group A4 with them giving up just six goals in six matches but scoring 16. The opposition in those six Nation League matches all qualified for the World Cup. The level of competition they faced during their current Nations League run is way higher than the teams Senegal has faced recently.
The Oranje play a 3-4-3 system that is a throwback to the style the nation played at the 2014 World Cup that saw them make it to the semifinals.
Senegal vs. Netherlands Prediction:
Senegal is not operating Holland’s level and with the African nation losing their top offensive threat to injury, I can’t see them finding the back of the net in this contest. Senegal’s defence can only hand the Dutch’s attack for so long and we’ll see the Netherlands’ undefeated streak continue.
