Toronto is at the top of the table in the Easter Conference but they are not exactly free and clear. They play well at home and need to take advantage of Portland to add to their lead.
It looks like it will come down to the wire in the West in terms of who is going to make the playoffs. Portland is in fifth spot right now but their position is far from secure.
The Timbers are in solid form. They beat L.A. 3-1 in their last match and have 2 victories and a draw in their last 3. Their last loss was on their last trip north of the border, they lost at Vancouver.
In beating Galaxy there was a lot of excitement early with both teams scoring in the first six minutes. After that the play settled a little. Portland took the lead before the half and never looked back after that.
Leading scorer Diego Valeri has been in fine form in August scoring in back to back games. Second leading scorer Fanendo Adi has not scored in his last four matches and has been pretty quiet over that stretch.
They need him to pick up his play and be more of a threat in support of Valeri. No team in the West has more goals than Portland.
Toronto has more point than anyone which is why it was so surprising that they could only manage a draw against DC United, the worst team in MLS this season.
It was on the road but it was one of the lamest performances we have seen from FC.
The lone goal was an own goal and they played the match with a man advantage for a significant stretch.
There is no real explanation for the result. Their three primary stars all played in the game – Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley.
Seba was active getting eight shots but only a couple of them were actually on goal. I would expect all three to be in good form for this one.
Toronto has yet to lose a match at BMO this season, one of just four clubs undefeated at home. Portland has one just three of 12 road matches so it is no surprise to see FC installed as a heavy favorite in this one.
The fact that they were so sluggish on the road in their last contest only adds to the fire that might erupt.
I am not sure how much looking ahead is a factor in soccer but if so you might want to know that Toronto next travels to Chicago to take on the Fire. Chicago is the closest team to them in the table and that match may determine who finishes on top.
Free Portland vs. Toronto MLS Prediction:
After the last game Toronto really needs to get out to a good start and push the action. Given that Portland has some offensive talent they could be vulnerable on the counterattack. Like so many game, whoever gets that first goal will be key.
Toronto won’t yield at home but if they get that first goal they will be hard to catch.
4* Free MLS Betting Pick: Toronto to win
Using the goal line is not a bad play here because the straight up moneyline odds are nothing to get excited about. Going over is not a bad idea either.
MLS Free Score Prediction: Toronto 2 – Portland 1
