The first game of the 2021 MLS Playoffs comes to us on Saturday from Suburu Park in Chester PA as the Union and Red Bulls take the pitch at 4:30 ET.
The weather doesn’t appear to be a factor for this match as we see a pleasant weekend set for the area on Saturday in Philly. Make sure you complete your Audi MLS Playoff bracket to claim some of those prizes being offered to the best of the best.
Well, it is a one-and-done scenario this season as there will be no home-and-home 2-legged playoff encounters in the 2021 MLS Playoffs. The winner of this tilt will go on to play the victor of the Orlando City vs. Nashville match that will be played on Tuesday, November 23.
The Revolution clinched the only bye in the Eastern Conference as they will get to host the winner of the match between Atlanta and NYCFC that will come on Sunday, November 21 at Yankee Stadium.
Philadelphia Union
The Union and Red Bulls met three times during the regular season and it was a low-scoring affair each and every time. The Union took the first meeting in May right here at Subaru Park, 1 – 0 and the other two results were both 1 – 1 draws.
The Union closed out the regular season a perfect 5 – 0 at home with a stingy defense and timely scoring. Philly outscored their final 5 home opponents 10 – 1 and are riding a streak of 4 clean sheets to wrap up the season at Subaru Park.
GK Andre Blake kept 12 clean sheets during the regular season for the Union and ironically they were the only wins he picked up in 2021. The Jamaican National Team keeper only won 12 games this year so that tells you the importance of him holding opponents out of the net.
If you didn’t see the final game of the season against NYCFC you missed two of the nicest saves we have seen all year. He kept that draw alive and that result essentially clinched the 2-seed for the Union.
Kacper Przybylko led the Union in scoring with 12 goals and 4 assists to his credit and he doubled the output of his closest teammate. Sergio Santos ended the year with 6 goals while Dan Gazdag and Cory Burke added 4 goals apiece to the mix.
The Union ended the regular season with 14W 12D 8L outscoring their opponents 48 – 35 tied with Nashville on 54 points. The tie was broken as a result of the win count for Philly who won 14 games to Nashville’s 12. Each team won their home game 1 – 0 so the straight-up win count had to break the tie.
NY Red Bulls
If you needed to cash an under this season you probably bet on the Red Bulls totals. Time and again we saw 1 – 0 and 1 – 1 results for this team but it was enough to barely hang on to the final playoff position in the East Standings.
With 48 points, the NYRB finished a point ahead of both DC United and defending champs Columbus who obviously won’t be repeating any titles this year.
As I mentioned, these two teams knew how to slow each other down during their 3 meetings this season. The Red Bulls tied for the league lead in goals allowed with 33 but the offense sputtered out only 39 goals in support.
Polish native Patryk Klimala led the Bulls in scoring with 8 goals and 7 dimes although he had to sit out the season finale suspended from card accumulation.
Fabio wasn’t too far behind with 7 goals and 7 assists of his own this season but then the scoring starts to slow down. Cristian Casseres did pick up 6 goals as the 21-year old found ways to pitch in in big spots throughout the campaign.
