This second-round playoff matchup will see second seeded, Atlanta United hosting the third seeded, Philadelphia Union.
This season these two teams played to a draw in Atlanta and the Union won in Philadelphia.
The Union had to comeback from a 3-1 scoreline to win their first-round game against the New York Red Bulls. The game also went to extra time where the Union scored their fourth and final goal to secure their spot in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The Union now have to travel to Atlanta to take on the defending champions of last years MLS Cup. Unlike like most clubs, the Union have not been a horrible road team. They enter this game with six wins away from home, eight losses and three draws. Keep in mind that they have never won a game in Atlanta, so they are sure to have some struggles.
Their attack was on point in the round one game, but looking at how they perform on the road, their is a noticeable drop-off.
On the road this season, the Union are scoring 1.29 goals per game. In three games at Atlanta, they have scored a total of two goals. Their leading scorer, Kacper Przybylko, has been ruled out for this game, so that is only going to make it harder for the Union to come away with a win.
Defensively, they are also much worse in games away from home. They allow 1.82 goals per game in these road matches, and will have their hands full with a confident Atlanta side.
Atlanta kept their title defense alive by win a close game with New England in their first round game. The score to this game was 1-0, with the lone goal coming late in the second half. They now face a club they failed to beat this season, but overall have beaten in three of the six all-time meetings.
Being able to play at home for Atlanta is a huge boost given that they always have a packed house. With a win over the Revolution last weekend, they now have thirteen home wins, two losses and three draws.
Their attack was a little stagnant last week, but they still have one of the most lethal attacks in the MLS. They average 2.06 goals per game at home and will likely need multiple goals in this game to put away the Union.
As for their defense, they rarely seem to allow a goal in their own stadium. They are allowing just 0.78 goals per game. The only problem is Atlanta is dealing with some injures that could be crucial to how their defense plays in this game.
The main injuries of concern are Michael Parkhurst and Miles Robinson. Both have already been ruled out, so they going to have to adjust on the fly.
Free Philadelphia Union vs. Atlanta United MLS Prediction:
Atlanta is a dominant force at home and I believe they will be too much for Philadelphia to handle. I like Atlanta to win the game and to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
4* Free MLS Betting Pick: Atlanta United -145
The Atlanta injuries are a concern, but with the Union missing their best striker, I think it will be tough for them to score. We are having to lay a little juice, but I think Atlanta is the play here and will take them on the money line.
MLS Free Score Prediction: Atlanta 2-0
