Just a couple of points separates these two clubs who are on the boundary of being relevant in the Eastern Conference. Home Philly is in the lead and can leap into playoff position with a win.
The Impact needed a win the last time out and they got, beating Orlando City 2-1. They are hoping to use it to propel themselves back into the playoffs this season.
Their last win before a couple of losses was against this same Philadelphia squad at Stade Saputo in Montreal. Consistency has been a problem for this group.
Leading scorer Ignacio Piatti scored against Orlando but had not scored in more than a month. He was their MVP a year ago and this team is not deep enough for him not to be a factor in every match. Too many times he has been an unused sub this year.
Forward Ballou Tabla has not been helping matters as he has been absent from the club as it appears he wants out of Montreal.
Not sure what the story is there as the native of Cote D’Ivoire makes him home on Montreal but he has just two goals on the season and is not always in the lineup.
That can wear on players who think they can do a lot more.
The Union are a middling club and they have been proving so most of the season. Their play over the last couple of months has been up and down but they won their most recent tilt, 3-1 at home against FC Dallas.
They are heavy favourites to turn that win into a streak by bagging Montreal this weekend.
CJ Sapong is having a wonderful season with the Union. He scored twice in their last win and has already set a career high with 12 goals. He tends to score in bunches and mostly at home so expect a nice performance from him in this contest.
Secondary scoring is not too bad either as the Union has three midfielders with four or more tallies this season. Fafa Picoult en enjoying a very nice MLS rookie campaign and seems to have secured his spot as a regular in the starting lineup.
Though not very big he is clever with the ball and can create space for himself.
Though it should have no effect on the pitch you might find it interesting to know that Philadelphia is the first team to have a chief tattoo artist.
The announcement is a nice way to make a bit of news in the summer and shows how teams are willing to go to great lengths to make sure the players have all that they need to succeed.
Free Montreal Impact vs. Philadelphia Union MLS Prediction:
These teams are probably pretty evenly matched so the venue could be key. Montreal has only won one match on the road all season long and the Union are strong at home. Big time payoff with the impact but the win seems improbable.
4* Free MLS Betting Pick: Philadelphia to win.
Not expecting a lot of fireworks in this one. Just a solid victory from start to finish.
MLS Free Score Prediction: Philadelphia 2 – Montreal 1
