Mexico and Poland face off in a World Cup soccer match at the Stadium 974. This is a temporary stadium that will be taken down once the World Cup is finished.
Mexico
This a Mexico team that hasn’t been talked about a lot heading into the Tournament, but there is a ton of pressure on this team from inside the country. Former Argentina coach Gerardo Martino is in charge of the squad, but if Mexico struggles in this World Cup, they will probably be looking for a new coach.
The big question and concern surrounding this team is the status of Raul Jiminez who is the star of this team. He hasn’t played for the Wolves since August because of a groin injury. He has been left on the team, but it’s unclear if he’s going to be able to go play in this game. Jesus Corona is dealing with an ankle injury and has been replaced on the squad.
Heading into the World Cup there has been some struggles, and they have lost two of their last three matches. The only win was over Iraq on November 9th and they were able to win 4-0. Since September 27th they have lost to Colombia and Sweden. The defense has shown some holes, and the defense is going to need to be a whole lot better in this game. If the defense struggles it’s going to be a long game.
Poland
On the other side of this matchup is Poland who are also a team that hasn’t been talked about heading into the World Cup, but they have expectations for this group stage. Poland is also dealing with some key injuries heading into the World Cup. Bartlomiej Dragowski, Jacek Goralski, and Adam Buksa have all pulled out of the World Cup because of injuries.
Heading into the World Cup Poland has played well winning two games in a row. Two games ago against Wales they won 1-0, and in the last game they beat Chile 1-0. They only had 26 percent of the possession but that doesn’t matter if they are the team to score.
The star of this team is Robert Lewandowski but he has often been snakebitten during the World Cup. There is a ton of pressure on him to be the guy to lead Poland out of the group stage. Poland likes to play a more defensive shape so they would seem to be more comfortable winning a game 1-0 rather than trying to win a game 3-2.
Mexico vs. Poland Prediction:
There seems to be a ton of people who are backing Poland in this game, but I think the smart play is with Mexico. This Mexico team has more offensive talent and even if Jiminez isn’t able to go, they are going to find a way to score goals. Poland won’t find the back of the net, and Mexico will secure the victory. Back Mexico on the money line.
