The top spot in Group E is still up for grabs as Spain leads the way with 4 points but are trailed by Japan and Costa Rica with 3 and Germany currently sit at the bottom with 1.
Spain needs just a single point out of this meeting to book their ticket to the round of 16 but Japan is expected to need much more than a draw to make it out of the group stage. That’s due to the expectation that Germany will take care of Costa Rica in their final match of the group stage and leapfrog Japan in points should the Samurai Blue fail to win.

Japan
After surprising the Germans with a 2-1 decision to open their World Cup campaign, Japan seemed poised to clinch their spot in the knockout stage. That is until they slipped up and lost to Costa Rica 1-0 despite outshooting their opponents 13-4 with 3 on target for the Japanese. What this shows is that they can still be a problem for top-tier squads but are also prone to losing focus against teams they’re expected to beat.
As previously mentioned, they do however have the potential to surprise opponents which they did prior to the World Cup with a 2-0 win against the Americans in a friendly.
Heading into this contest, it’s unclear if the 24th ranked nation will be at 100% as they are dealing with a few injuries on the back end and in midfield.
Spain
In their first contest of the tournament, Spain bludgeoned Costa Rica in a 7-0 route with 6 different goal scorers. They posted 17 shots with 8 on target while controlling 82% in terms of possession, easily covering the over. Against Germany, they found themselves finishing the match in a 1-1 draw while still leading the possession game.
With their strong possession game, it means that they’ll have to keep focused against a Japanese squad poised to capitalize on any mistakes Spain makes, just as they did to Germany.
Even though he came in on a substitution in each match, someone to keep your eye on is Alvaro Morata who has found himself on the scoresheet with a goal in each game. Morata currently ranks first in goals per minutes played of any player with more than one strike with an average of 1 goal per 34.5 minutes.
In 59 international matches, the striker has scored 29 goals which puts him in a tie for fifth most with Fernando Hierro. Against Japan, we could see him in the starting XI as he looks to add to his international goal total.
On the back end, Captain Sergio Busquets is set to be rested for this match-up as he is one booking away from suspension.
Free Japan vs. Spain Prediction
While Spain should punch their ticket to the knockout stage, three of their last 5 matches have hit the over. Going back even further, Spain has found the back of the net in 23 straight matches with 12 hitting over 2.5 combined goals.
Japan is good enough to capitalize on at least one turnover and find the back of the net but I expect Spain to do the heavy lifting in the match.
Essentially it means that, barring a surprise from Costa Rica, Japan’s tournament is likely done but they won’t go down without a fight.
