France may be playing in county but they might feel like everyone is rooting against them with Iceland, everyone’s favourite underdog, the opponent…but will that be enough to cost them a victory.
Iceland may have beaten England but beating a better French team that has so much at stake will be even more daunting.
France
France has advanced to this point with little difficulty. In the group stage they drew with the Swiss, which was a little surprising though and they fell down 1-0 early before beating Ireland to advance.
Thankfully they got the equalizer and winning goals early in the second half so the country could breathe. I think it is fair to say that the host nation is playing well but not quite at an intimidating level.
The exception may be Antoine Griezman. His two goals against Ireland tied him with Garreth Bale and Alvaro Morota for the tournament lead with three. France has played attacking football and has been averaging 2 goals per game.
France should be able to handle spunky Iceland but they have to be a bit nervous after what happened in the last round.
Soccer is definitely one of those sports where you do not have a lot of success playing catch up.
Iceland
Iceland is coming off the biggest win in their soccer history, surprising England. Experts can say what they want afterwards but this was a shock, with all due respect to the Icelandic squad.
The mountain gets a little bit higher for Iceland with this quarterfinal match against France. Facing a host nation is always a challenge, facing one that is the pre-tournament favourite makes it even more daunting.
I hate to call their win for the Brits a fluke but the reality is they were on the defensive most of the time, possessing the ball for less than 40% of the match.
They showed an amazing ability to nullify the British attack and stay calm late in the game.
Iceland is a huge underdog in this one and you can bet there is going to be some people sprinkling a little on their side just to try and hit it big. It is very tempting.

France will definitely look to attack early and play with the lead for as much as possible. I know that is probably the most common strategy is soccer but given what they saw Iceland do to England that has to be the plan.
Iceland should be brimming with confidence but I don’t think you can back them unless you are really confident they will get that first goal. They didn’t against the UK but that squad is known for not completing the deal, so to speak.
