The New York Red Bulls will hop on I-95 and make the trek south to the Nation’s Capital on Wednesday night as these old rivals meet again. Only 4 hours separate United and the Red Bulls and the Atlantic Cup battle will continue for these original MLS franchises that first took the field in the inaugural 1996 MLS season.
United took the first of the two meetings these two clubs have played in 2021, 1 – 0, back on July 25 right here on Audi FIeld. The Red Bulls and United played to a 1 – 1 draw in Harrison, NY, back on an emotional September 11 for us East Coast folk. (The Rainmaker is a native New Yorker, btw)
United is coming off a 6 – 0 thrashing at the hands of that other New York team, NYCFC, but yet they come into this midweek match favored over the Bulls. The line setters’ brains have officially fallen out and that is why I wanted this to be my first MLS article here at CP.
DC United
DC United took it on the chin this past Saturday and the match with NYCFC got away early and they never recovered. When you see a 6 – 0 FT result I assume you get how bad this team looked in just a few days ago and now oddsmakers think they fixed all of their issues in time for this outing?
This being a rivalry game will certainly add a dimension to the story but the real story is that United is playing like shit and the Red Bulls? Well, no, they are not playing like shit and this game could get ugly again.
Norwegian striker Ola Kamara has been quite impressive leading the league with 17 goals scored but he has been held off the score sheet the last 4 games for United. Paul Arriola is tied for second in scoring for United with 5 goals scored but he has been out of the last 3 games with a groin injury and is not expected back for this home tilt. Arriola and Ramon Abila have both scored 5 times, but Abila also missed 3 of the last 9 games and has only 1 goal to his credit over that span.
The club is still in a tie for second-most goals scored in the Eastern Conference with 51, but they have let 50 balls fly into their own net. This team has been outscored 11 – 3 over this 4 game run without a win and it has dropped them to 9th place out of the playoff positions.
NY Red Bulls
While United struggles to find points lately, the Red Bulls are not having those issues recently. New York has taken 6 wins and 2 draws from their last 8 outings and it has propelled them to 6th in the Eastern Conference standings with 43 points.
The defensive side of the ball has been overwhelmingly impressive allowing only 3 goals over this 8-game run of producing points. Brazilian keeper Carlos has been a wall in front of the frame for the Bulls and he has certainly been impressive during his first full year in the U.S. Carlos has been seen all around Austria from 2015 – 2021 although he did play 4 games for Philly back in 2019.
Polish native Patryk Klimala is leading the Red Bulls with 8 goals this season and he has done well working with some unfamiliar faces around him. Klimala came over from Celtic after 17 starts over the last two campaigns with the Scottish outfit. He picked up his fifth yellow card of the season last time out and should he be booked in this match he will have to sit out of the Montreal affair this upcoming Saturday in Harrison.
Davis and Yearwood are also facing a suspension should they see the refs book on Wednesday night.
The reason I made my comment about the line setters falling asleep is for the fact that we have a lovely line to take advantage of here.
The NYRB DNB (Draw no Bet) is listed at +145 at most major books and I see as high as +149 at a handful of European books. There is no need to settle for the +0.5 handicap and pay the juice when you can put that kind of value on the board. SO…
Free DC United vs. New York Red Bulls MLS Final Analysis:
It all comes to the defense and the Red Bulls have it while United just got 6 goals dumped on them by a struggling NYCFC club.
I expect a 2 – 0 affair and the Red Bulls to take 3 points but just in case they draw we have the safety net of the DNB… at +145!
