It’s a clash of the Titans in the quarter-finals of the 2020 EURO on Friday, when Belgium will clash against Italy. Two of the best teams in this tournament are locking horns in what is expected to be a really exciting match.
Only one team can remain unbeaten, so let’s see which one gets the most chances.
Belgium
Belgium might not have had a very flashy or extravagant match against Portugal, but they still got the job done.
A sole goal by Thorgan Hazard at the 42nd minute decided that match, but it was Belgium’s only shot on target.
Portugal tried really hard and had 4 times as many scoring attempts (24 total) and 5 times as many shots on goal, but couldn’t find an equalizer, as Belgium moved to the quarter-finals seemingly easily.
However, their qualification came with a cost, as both Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard got injured in that match and are currently listed as questionable to participate. They did not participate in team trainings but did get some individual work done. Their status will greatly determine the outcome of this match.
Italy
Italy looked…different against Austria than how they looked like in the entire tournament so far.
Maybe the rotation in the squad kind of rippled the waters in the wrong way, but Italy struggled a lot to overcome Austria.
They were saved by an offside call at the 65th minute when Arnautovic scored a goal, but it was disallowed. The match eventually went to extra time, where Chiesa took the lead and Pessina doubled that just 10 minutes later, only for Austria to score a late consolation goal.
Italy’s rotation brought PSG’s Veratti in the starting line-up, but coach Mancini must really consider his options. Belgium are not as forgiving as Austria, and a single mistake could be enough to see Italy crash and burn.
Belgium vs. Italy Prediction:
It might not be safe to make assumptions about this match before we have some news about whether De Bruyne and/or Hazard play (and how much will they play for). Belgium are a totally different team with De Bruyne in the starting line-up, and a possible absence could be disastrous.
Italy should stick in the winning formula they have been suing for quite some time now, and avoid any unnecessary experiments. Team news state that Chiellini is almost ready to participate, which would see him inserted back into the starting line-up.
One way or the other, I think that we will see goals here, and the Over 2.25 Goals at plus money is a juicy bet to make for Friday.
