Disappointing is the word that comes to mind when describing Arsenal’s season last year. They finished 5th, which obviously is not terrible, but a club like Arsenal has much bigger expectations which they failed to meet. They finished one point behind Tottenham, meaning they will only qualify for the Europa League instead of the Champions League. A top four finish will be their aim this season. To do that means they cannot drop points to clubs like Newcastle.

Arsenal had the third highest scoring club last season, but still were not able to get the job done. Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang led the club with 22 goals. Alexandre Lacazette followed behind him with 13. Other than these two guys, Arsenal did not get enough scoring. Their third highest scorer had just 6 goals. They need more of a balanced attack to ensure they are able to pick each other up when someone has a bad day. There is also the threat of injury, which could decimate a team over the long season. Having multiple scoring will keep them relevant in case something goes wrong.

Part of the Arsenal struggles came from their defending. Even though they only allowed 51 goals, this only ranked in the middle of the table. They need to tighten up in the back and not concede cheap goals. This is easy to say so we will see how it turns out, but Arsenal has to limit the lower tier teams to have a chance for a title.

Newcastle United

Newcastle finished the year in 13th while only earning 45 points. They were never in real danger of being relegated, but still is was a disappointing year. Now starting the new season with Arsenal will be even a bigger challenge considering they have not beat Arsenal since April of 2018.

The Newcastle attack was lacking last year, which is why they only scored 42 goals in 38 games. More than half of their goals were scored by two players last season, so someone else must step up. Now Newcastle is not going to go win the league title, but as long as they improve or even finish in the top 10, it could be considered a successful campaign.

Defending was actually not the worst last season for Newcastle. They allowed 48 goals, and though this gives them a goal differential of -6, their defense was better than Arsenal in terms of the numbers. Now this will probably not roll over into the new season and I expect Newcastle to struggle against Arsenal.
