These two Central Division teams each have 50 points entering the post All-Star break stretch.
Both the Dallas Stars and the Winnipeg Jets have gone through a very similar season script this year, with each having a powerful offense but question marks away from the puck.
In preparation before the NHL Expansion Draft this off-season, it will be interesting to see what types of moves these teams make if they are still on the cusp of the wild-card seeds.
Winnipeg Jets
The overall numbers on offense for the Jets have been good on the year, with the team currently sitting in 10th overall in goals per game at 2.8.
Their powerplay has been successful on 17.8% of their attempts, which is good for 16th, so it’s apparent their struggles are not in the offensive zone.
Mark Scheifele remains the front man in Winnipeg leading the charge with 48 points in 49 games played.
The young center continues to develop in one of the game’s premier offensive talents at just 23 years old, after being selected 7th overall in the 2011 draft.

When the Jets made the selection, some eyebrows were raised as it was seen as slightly “off the board,” but they’re being raised for other reasons now.
Fellow top selection, Nikolaj Ehlers, has been a steady scorer as well with 44 points of his own on the year. Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine round out the top of the Jets’ scoring chart of players with 40+ points.
Laine, the rookie sensation, has potted 22 goals to tie for the team lead, but has done so in just 44 games.
The goaltending has been an Achilles heel for the Jets, seeing the team registered an average of 3.1 goals allowed per game on average. Connor Hellebuyck has struggled this season after posting a solid 2.34 GAA and .918 SV% in his debut last year.
His current season numbers, a 2.82 GAA and a .908 SV%, don’t appear too terrible, but he hasn’t been able to provide a crucial save in tight games when needed.
This led to the organization recalled the ghost of Ondrej Pavelec from the AHL and start him in four consecutive games before being relieved by Hellebuyck to start the final pre-All-Star break game.
Dallas Stars
The Stars are familiar with goaltending woes, as they have a serious problem in net of their own. Their season numbers almost mirror those of the Jets’ exactly, with the Stars ranking 28th in goals against per game, at 3.1 as well.
Their penalty kill grades out as the worst in the league at just a 74.0% efficiency rate.
Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen have both been underwhelming in their time in Dallas, however both are paid handsomely to be there. The Stars might be praying that if they don’t protect either in the Expansion Draft, that Las Vegas snags both and solves their crease problem for them.
Neither goalie has a SV% better than .902 on the year, with Lehtonen checking in at that mark and Niemi just stay afloat in the .900’s with an even .900. Lehtonen also owns the better goals against average on the season with a mark of 2.82 compared to Niemi’s 3.20.

John Klingberg continues to be the shining Star (pun intended) on the blueline in big D, registering 27 points on the season. He is the Dallas d-man who has more than 13 points for the collectively underwhelming group.
Klingberg will be the player that GM Jim Nill will try to re-tool around on the back-end, as well as finding a new goalie to play in front of.
Once again, Dallas’ offense is their strength, with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn leading the charge yet again. Seguin is the top point producer for the Stars this season, registering 18 goals and 47 points in 50 games.
Benn has chipped in 41 points in 46 games, picking up the pace of late and looking like he is finally through the ailment that sidelined him for a few games.
Winger Patrick Eaves is having a career season with 18 goals in 49 games, on pace to shatter his only other 20-goal season which came in 2005-06.
He’s helped fill in for the drop in production from Patrick Sharp (11 points in 24 games), who has dealt with concussion issues for a large part of the year.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Winnipeg has a -11 goal differential on the year
- Winnipeg is 10-14-3 on the road
- Winnipeg is 6-6-1 in 2017
- Both Mark Scheifele and Tyler Seguin sit in the top-10 in NHL scoring
- Dallas are 4-5-3 in 2017
- Dallas is 13-7-6 at home this year
Free Winnipeg Jets vs. Dallas Stars NHL Hockey Prediction:
This game doesn’t really set up for a goaltending/ defensive battle, unless the goalies can find their way into the scoring action.
Each team sits amongst the top half of the NHL in goals per game, and have combined for an average in the neighborhood of six combined.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
I look for this one to be a shootout, with the forward corps all being rested post All-Star break and the goaltenders having that time to think about their season woes.
