The perennial Cup contenders in Chicago will take on the league’s basement dwellers in Arizona, in a post All-Star break matchup that seems incredibly lop-sided.
Chicago sits 2nd in the Central Division with 65 points, ahead of any Pacific Division team in the Western Conference standings, including the lowly Arizona Coyotes and their 38 total points on the year.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks had the most representatives of any NHL team at the All-star game over the past weekend.
The four Blackhawks that represented their team for the Central Division included Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and Corey Crawford.
Kane is once again having a great year on the point sheet, with 49 total in 51 games played so far. He, along with linemates Artemi Panarin (44 points) and Artem Anisimov (34 points) all sit top-three in team scoring.
Jonathan Toews is having a down year with just 28 points in 42 games, though no one questions his importance to his team.

Young winger, Ryan Hartman, is a former first round pick who has looked good skating alongside Jonathan Toews when called upon to. Hartman has been a nice complimentary scorer in his first year in the NHL, with 10 goals and 10 assists thus far.
It’s no surprise to see Duncan Keith leading the Hawks blueline in points (with 33), as the defender has finished atop the team’s defensive scoring in five of the last seven seasons.
His D-partner, Brent Seabrook, accounts for the two seasons which Keith hasn’t. On the year, Seabrook has 24 points of his own.
The goaltending play of Corey Crawford earned him an All-Star selection.
Crawford has been strong between the pipes with 18 win, a 2.57 GAA and a .918 SV% on the season with two shutouts. When spelled, Scott Darling has also been excellent with a 2.31 GAA, .925 SV% and 12 wins of his own.
Odds are Darling gets the nod against the league’s worst team here.
Arizona Coyotes
The Coyotes finished the pre All-Star break with a three-game win streak, which is a bright spot amongst an otherwise terrible season overall. The three consecutive wins is their longest streak of success in 2016-17.
The rebuilding Coyotes are poised for another top selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, hoping to stake their claim on the likes of Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier.
GM John Chayka will look to acquire future assets entering this years’ trade deadline and ship off some expiring or aging players that aren’t part of the rebuild.
Veteran captain, Shane Doan, may finally see his time in the desert come to an end, and he has acknowledged as much by stating he may be willing to accept a trade.
Martin Hanzal is playing like a top centerman and will be a very useful asset to a contending team, with the ability to play anywhere in the lineup and bringing with him a ton of playoff experience and a Cup ring.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson will likely be anointed the next Coyotes’ captain once Doan has parted ways. The veteran defenseman is still just 25 years old and has excelled both on and off the ice in Arizona for many years already.
He sits second in team points with 26, behind just Radim Vrbata and his 34.
Mike Smith was the lone Coyote representative at the All-Star game this season, and made it a memorable one. Smith buried a shot from him own goal-line into a mini net that led to a huge crowd eruption.
The veteran netminder owns a 11-13-5 record on the year with a .917 SV% and a 2.85 GAA.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Blackhawks rank 10th in goals against at 2.6 on average
- Chicago is 12-9-1 on the road this season
- Chicago is 7-5 in their last 12 games
- Patrick Kane’s 49 points are the 5th most in the NHL.
- Arizona has a minus-44 goal differential on the season.
- Arizona is 11-11-2 on home ice this year
Free Chicago Blackhawks vs. Arizona Coyotes NHL Hockey Prediction:
The All-Star break came at an inopportune time for the Coyotes, who were on a three-game winning streak before the prolonged break and subdued some of their momentum.
They will face a tough schedule, with LA, Chicago, San Jose, Montreal and Pittsburgh on the schedule as their first five opponents after the break.
Despite the road game, Chicago should have no problem handling the league’s worst team, especially knowing how tight the playoff picture is shaping up in the West.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Chicago -1.5
I like Chicago to cover against a Coyotes team who owns the second worst goal differential in the league, and the second worst offense overall.
