The Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars both look to stay alive in the playoff race as they drop the puck in Dallas for their first meeting since November 2015.
Toronto Maple Leafs
In just his second season as head coach, Mike Babcock has completely turned the Maple Leafs around. For the last five years, one of the NHL’s most historic teams has continued to dwell in the cellar of the Eastern Conference.
But thanks to Babcock and rookie sensation Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs find themselves a single point behind the Boston Bruins for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot. The Leafs have also played five fewer games than Boston, which bodes well for their postseason chances.

Led by Matthews, James van Riemsdyk and Mitchell Marner, Toronto ranks 6th in the NHL with 3.06 goals per game. The Leafs have scored four goals in five of their last eight games and have won all five of those contests. When their offense is on, it’s more than difficult to keep up with them.
Frederik Anderson has provided a spark to Toronto’s defense that has drastically improved from last season. The Maple Leafs were near the bottom of every defensive category last year, but Anderson’s play has seen Toronto rank 15th in goals allowed so far.
His .921 save percentage is the same mark as both Carey Price and Pekka Rinne, two quality NHL goaltenders.
Dallas Stars
The Stars are in desperate need of an offensive renaissance if they want to make the playoffs this year. It’s as simple as that. Just like last season, netminders Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi have been atrocious as the Stars rank 28th in goals allowed and 30th on the penalty kill.
Dallas could survive tumultuous goaltending last season because the offense was so deadly, but with an offense not nearly as efficient as last year’s, it’s easy to see why the team is 5th in the Central.

Forwards Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin lead the team with a combined 88 points between them, but Patrick Eaves is the only other Star to have at least 10 goals.
Dallas has also struggled against Eastern Conference opponents this year with a record of 4-8-4.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Maple Leafs are 11-5 SU in their last 16 games.
- Maple Leafs are 3-0 in their last 3 games vs. the Western Conference.
- Stars are 4-9 SU in their last 13 games.
- Stars O/U is 8-5 in their last 13 games.
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Dallas Stars NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Maple Leafs are inching closer to that final playoff spot in the East, and this is a very winnable game for them.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Toronto ML
The Stars’ goaltending has been awful this year, and I think Matthews and company will be too much for Dallas to handle.
