The New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings are both far removed from their past glory as each team currently occupies the cellar of its division.
At 49 points apiece, they’ll drop the puck in Hockey Town to see who can eclipse 50 points first.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils were once thought to be a dark horse playoff team with Cory Schneider between the pipes, but they’ve been far from it as Schneider and the Devils’ defense have struggled all year.
Last season, Schneider was among the NHL’s best in nearly every goaltending category, but he’s done a complete 180 this season. His 2.71 GAA is among the NHL’s worst, as is his .910 save percentage.

Despite Schneider’s struggles, the New Jersey offense is also responsible for the team’s woeful season. The Devils are 28th in both goals and power play percentage, and their 27.1 shots on on goal per game ranks dead last in the NHL.
Taylor Hall is the only Devil with more than 30 points while Adam Henrique and PA Parenteau are tied for the team lead with 12 goals apiece. That is terrible, and the Devils need to find more than a few goal scorers in the offseason if they want to be competitive next year.
Detroit Red Wings
Unless the Red Wings reel of an incredible amount of wins in the second half, their streak of 25 consecutive years reaching the postseason will finally come to an end. And based on how they’ve played thus far, I’m not too confident in their chances.
Detroit is struggling on both sides of the ice. Henrik Zetterberg and Thomas Vanek are the only Red Wings with more than 30 points, and the goaltending has been even worse.

While Detroit has historically had quality goaltenders like Chris Osgood and Domink Hasek, this year’s group has been awful. Jimmy Howard has been out since Dec. 23 and Petr Mrazek has been atrocious in his place.
Mrazek, who looked like Detroit’s goaltender of the future last season, comes in with a 10-12-5 record, a GAA of 3.16 and a save percentage of .894.
Rookie Jared Coreau has had to answer the call given Mrazek’s struggles, and he’s played well enough to keep the Red Wings in most games. If he gets the nod in this game, Detroit will have a much better chance of winning.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Devils are 4-7 SU in their last 11 games.
- Devils are 5-1 in their last 6 road games.
- Red Wings are 10-11-4 at home.
- Red Wings O/U is 7-6 in their last 13 games.
Free New Jersey Devils vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction:
Neither one of these teams is a safe bet by any means, and this particular matchup features two of the Eastern Conference’s worst.
While the Red Wings finished the first half on a four-game losing streak, the Devils were busy winning their last four road games. I’m looking at that angle in this game.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: New Jersey ML
While I’m not overly confident by any means, I’ll play the road team that’s been tearing it up away from home.
