The Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping for two important points against the lowly Carolina Hurricanes as the two teams face off in Raleigh.
Toronto Maple Leafs
It’s been tough sledding for the Toronto Maple Leafs since the end of January. The team is just 3-7 SU over their last 10 games and is clinging to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by a single point.
Even if they fail to make the postseason this year, the Maple Leafs are miles ahead of where they’ve been the last five seasons. In only his second season at the helm, head coach Mike Babcock has taken the Leafs from a consistent cellar dwellar to an exciting team in the Eastern Conference.
With Mitchell Marner and rookie sensation Auston Matthews leading the charge, Toronto is full of playmakers who can put the puck in the net. The Leafs have scored 25 goals over their last seven games, which is more than 3.5 goals per game.
Unfortunately, the goaltending has been a liability. Toronto is 22nd in goals per game allowed (2.88) and 28th in shots on goal allowed (32.5 per game).
The Leafs have allowed at least five goals in five of their last nine games, and it’s putting even more pressure on their offense to score more goals. They need to get that under control if they want to make the playoffs.
With just 56 points, the Carolina Hurricanes find themselves in last place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Hurricanes suffered an ugly 2-1 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday, which is as bad of a loss as they come. The Avs entered the game with only 15 wins on the season, but they managed to steal one against the struggling Canes.
Like the Maple Leafs, goaltending has plagued the Hurricanes for most of the season. Carolina allows the same amount of goals per game as Toronto, though the Hurricanes possess the NHL’s 2nd-best penalty killing unit.
The Canes’ 2nd-ranked penalty kill will be a true test for Toronto’s 2nd-best power play unit, and a simple trip to the penalty box could be the difference for either team.
Despite Carolina’s struggles this season, they have a few edges over Toronto in this spot. The Hurricanes are an impressive 17-6-2 at home and own a 9-4-2 record against the Atlantic Division.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Maple Leafs are 6-6-3 vs. the Metropolitan Division.
- Maple Leafs are 1-5 SU in their last six road games.
- Maple Leafs are 4-9 in back-to-back games.
- Hurricanes are 6-3 SU in their last nine home games.
- Hurricanes are 17-6-2 at home.
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Carolina Hurricanes NHL Hockey Prediction:
Don’t let Carolina’s last-place standing deter you from siding with them in this game. A majority of the Canes’ struggles have come on the road as the team is just 7-22 SU away from home.
On the other hand, Carolina is 17-8 at home and is allowing an impressive 1.75 goals per game over their last four home contests.

The Hurricanes are averaging 3.14 goals per game over their last seven games at home, and they’ll face a Toronto team that is just 4-9 in back-to-back games.
