The Leafs’ California swing continues on Friday night, with their visit to suburban Los Angeles to deal with the Anaheim Ducks.
One would think the schedule gods would be better served by putting the Kings and Ducks games together, allowing for a mere crosstown bus rather than a trip to northern California (San Jose) sandwiched in between. But therein lies the genius of Hall of Fame commish Gary Bettman. I’ll stop the snark there, I suppose.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs are dynamic hockey club, and one the rather older, rather slower Anaheim Ducks must be wary of. They’re also on a roll, winning five of their last six, including a statement 5-3 victory over San Jose, Pacific time last night. Secondary scoring, minus all-everything center Auston Matthews, has been critical.
Speedy Kasperi Kapanen stepped up once again last night; John Tavares and creative Mitch Marner were their productive selves, and Toronto was even getting help from little-known entities like Josh Leivo.
When everyone is playing up to their standards and Andersen is dialled in (as he was when he made over 40 saves last night in the Bay Area) this team is formidable. The lone solace for the home team might be this is a back-to-back game for the Leafs, on the road in a different time zone.
It sucks that Cam Fowler, one of the Ducks’ best young blueliners, is out indefinitely after requiring surgery from a facial fracture, sustained by taking a puck in the face. It certainly doesn’t help the Ducks prospects, either.
To be fair, Anaheim has been stingy at keeping pucks out of their net – the goals allowed and penalty kill metrics rank in or near the Top 10 league-wide – but the loss of Fowler hurts, and there isn’t much offense on this team.
When your leading goal scorer is Jakob Silfverberg with five, and your leading points guy is Rickard Rakell with 13, yikes. To say things are done by committee in Orange County is truly an understatement. It doesn’t help that longtime sniper Corey Perry is on the shelf indefinitely, and Fowler provides some offensive pizzazz from the back end.
Better defenses have been scored on plenty by Toronto. Starting goalie John Gibson will need to have a big game.

Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Anaheim Ducks NHL Prediction:
It’s conceivable that the home team could catch the Buds napping after a busy West Coast roadie and after playing a game a few hundred miles away just last night. But on paper, Toronto should win this in a runaway, especially when you note that the Leafs are 8-1 on the road thus far.
I don’t think it will be that cut and dry; for one, the Leafs definitely should be tired and for two, it’s likely that Toronto backup Garrett Sparks will get the start in net, and he isn’t nearly as good as Freddy.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: UNDER
Toronto must have put a lot of heart and soul in that big win over San Jose last night, so you wonder how much is left in the tank, before they grab a red-eye back to the Eastern Time Zone.
