A pair of underachieving divisional foes will begin the new year in North Carolina as the Hurricanes welcome the struggling New Jersey Devils to town.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils came into the 2016-17 season with high aspirations, but their campaign thus far has been mired in disappointment. This is due to New Jersey’s inability to play sound defense, an attribute that has kept them in most games during the last couple of seasons.
Goaltender Corey Schneider was one of the best net minders in the NHL last season, but this season has been a disaster. The former Canuck is just 10-12-5 this season with a save percentage of .904 and a GAA of 2.9.

With the offense struggling to find the back of the net, Schneider was the one who kept them in most games.
That isn’t the case this year, and it’s why the Devils find themselves in last place of the Metropolitan Division.
Carolina’s putrid divisional record gives the Devils a glimmer of hope for a victory, but they’ll need to score some goals in order to make that happen.
And over their last four games, they’ve scored just six.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes haven’t played since their 3-1 loss in Tampa Bay on Dec. 31, an effort that saw them lose the second leg of a back-to-back for just the second time this season.
The Canes, who possess the top penalty killing unit in the NHL, were snake bitten for two goals by the Lighting’s unprecedented power play unit in the loss.
Fortunately for Carolina, the Devils can’t score goals to save their lives.
With New Jersey ranking near the bottom of nearly every offensive category, the Hurricanes are hoping veteran goalie Cam Ward will help them take care of business.

Carolina’s defense has been the spark of the team this year, as they rank 11th in goals allowed, 4th in shots on goal allowed and 1st in both the penalty kill and penalty minutes.
Despite a lackluster 16-13-7 record, the Hurricanes possess a home record of 11-3-1, one of the NHL’s best.
Trends
- Devils are 5-12-5 on the road.
- Devils are 4-4-2 vs. the Metropolitan Division.
- Hurricanes are 11-3-1 at home.
- Hurricanes are 2-6-2 vs. the Metropolitan Division.
- Hurricanes are 5-1 in their last six home games.
Free New Jersey Devils vs. Carolina Hurricanes NHL Hockey Prediction:
Neither one of these teams has played up to expectations thus far, but New Jersey seems to be playing without an identity. The Devils have no offense, defense or goaltending, and it’s why they’re in the cellar of their division.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes own one of the best home records in the league.
