Florida, coming off a wild 7-4 win over Nashville, will look to continue playing solid hockey when it heads to San Jose to take on the Sharks.
San Jose, with just a single win in the last five games, is trying to itself out of a mini slump and get back to the type of play that has put the team at the top of the Pacific Division.
It’s been an encouraging five-game stretch for Florida, one that has seen the team win four games, including a high-scoring affair against the Predators. Sitting 5th in the weak Atlantic Division, if this play continues, the Panthers have a shot at sneaking into the playoffs.
To do so, the offense needs to continue playing how it’s played recently. The Panthers have 20 goals in the last five games, an average of 4.0 per game, and are showing signs of life since the returns of Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov.
Huberdeau, in his three games since returning for a season-long injury, has two goals and three assists for Florida. He’s provided a huge spark for the offense, a much needed one.
Barkov, in his three games back since an injury knocked him out in late December, has a pair of goals for Florida. He was having a wonderful year before getting hurt and he’ll look to pick up right where he left off.
In his 39 games this season, he has 30 points (11G, 19A).
San Jose Sharks
San Jose hasn’t had the best start to 2017 and has looked a bit shaky, despite winning enough games to stay atop the Pacific Division. The team is just 2-2-2 in February and needs to start winning consistently again to protect that top spot and home ice advantage in the playoffs.
The offense has really dropped off recently. The team is 16th in the league in goals for the year with 156, but hasn’t been able to keep up with opponents’ goal-scoring recently.
Frankly, a lot of this can be put on the defense, a defense that has allowed 18 goals in the last five games.
This is uncharacteristic defense for the Sharks, who are one of the top defenses in the league this year. On the season, San Jose ranks 3rd in the league in goals against, giving up just 135 on the year.
The defense has to play better in order to take some pressure off the offense. For the Sharks, two-way defenseman Brent Burns continues to be the Sharks’ best scoring option.
This season, he has 24 goals along with 35 assists. Over the last five games, he has two goals and two assists.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Total has gone OVER in three of Florida’s last five games
- San Jose is 1-4 SU in the last five games
Free Florida Panthers vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Hockey Prediction:
I like San Jose to take this one at home. The Sharks are a still a solid squad and should have a bounce back game here. San Jose gets the W.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
San Jose has struggled on the defensive end recently and Florida has picked things up offensively thanks to the returns of Huberdeau and Barkov. I like this to be a relatively high-scoring affair. I’d take the OVER here.
