Coming off a solid 5-2 win over Buffalo, the Detroit Red Wings head to the nation’s capital to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Columbus, fresh off an easy victory over Detroit, will look to win its sixth in a row.
Detroit Red Wings
Sitting dead last in the weakest division in the NHL, very little has gone right for the Detroit Red Wings this season. The offense has been bad, the defense has been worse, and Petr Mrazek’s giving up 3.14 goals per game.
It’s going to be a tall order for Detroit to win this game against Columbus. The Red Wings have to play better hockey on both sides of the ice. Offensively, the team needs more from Dylan Larkin. Larkin has just 12 goals and seven assists on the year, and has been in a goal-scoring slump recently.
In his last five games, he doesn’t have a goal and has just one assist.
Larkin needs to play better hockey and Detroit needs even more from Thomas Vanek. Vanek has had a solid year offensively, scoring 13 goals and 22 assists. In his last five, he has a goal and three assists.
The captain Henrik Zetterberg has been Detroit’s best goal-scorer over the last few games. He has 12 goals on the year, but three in his last five games. Look for him to get a lot of chances at the net and he’ll need to put one or two away to give Detroit a shot.
Columbus Blue Jackets
There’s no need for Columbus to panic just yet. However, the team has lost five of the last seven and slipped to 3rd place in the Metropolitan.
The Blue Jackets are still poised for a playoff run, but games against weak teams like Detroit have to be won.
When you have the 5th best goal-scoring team in the league and the 3rd best defense, you shouldn’t be losing five of seven. Columbus has been poor on the defense end, which has severely affected All-Star goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.
So far in February, Bobrovsky is just 1-2-0 with a .884 save percentage and 13 goals allowed. His defense has let him down at times but he hasn’t been the same goaltender we saw pre-All Star break. He needs to step up and be the stone wall between the pipes that we saw for the first half of the year.
On offense, the team gets a lot from guys like Cam Atkinson and Brandon Saad. But, more is needed from center Sam Gagner. Gagner was great in the early goings of the year and has 14 goals and 20 assists.
However, over his last five games, he hasn’t scored a goal and has just a single assist.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Detroit is 2-4 ATS in the last six games
- Columbus is 2-5 SU in the last seven games
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Columbus Blue Jackets NHL Hockey Prediction:
Despite losing five of the last seven, Columbus is a solid hockey team capable of winning this game, especially at home in Nationwide Arena. Detroit won’t lay down for the Blue Jackets but Columbus will emerge victorious in this one.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Columbus -1.5
This Detroit team has given up four or more goals in four of the last six games. Columbus has a powerful offense and a solid defense. I see Columbus covering the spread here.
