Columbus is now on a 16 game winning streak and looking for number 17 in order to tie the NHL record for winning streaks. To do so, they’ll play Metropolitan division rival Washington in what should be a fantastic matchup.
Washington, coming off a high-flying 6-5 overtime win over Toronto, will hope to stop Columbus’ chase for history in D.C.
Columbus Blue Jackets
It’s officially time to take Columbus seriously, if you’d hadn’t already been before. Whether or not the team’s fantastic two-way play translates to a deep playoff run remains to be seen but, right now, it’s looking more and more likely that it will.
The Jackets’ offense has been outstanding. The team ranks 3rd in the league in goals (126) and has four guys in double figures in goals. Cam Atkinson has had a brilliant year with 18 goals and 20 assists, including three goals and an assist in his last five games.

Brandon Saad has been playing extremely well. He has two goals and four assists in his last five games. Captain Nick Foligno has three goals and five assists in his last five, giving him 13 goals and 20 assists on the year.
Center Sam Gagner has struggled scoring the puck recently, with just one goal in his last seven games, but has had a very good season overall (14G, 14A).
This team has the ability to beat anyone with the way it plays on both sides of the ice. It will be a tough one against Washington, but it should be no surprise to anyone if the Blue Jackets get their 17th in a row.
Washington Capitals
The Capitals have won three straight and will look to build a streak of their own while ending Columbus’ impressive streak.
What gives Washington a great chance to win is the defense. Ranked 4th in goals against on the year, the Capitals have been able to contain impressive top lines and hold teams like the Blackhawks, Canadiens, and Flames to two or less goals.
To beat Columbus, the Caps will need that kind of magic and find a way to stop the likes of Gagner, Saad, and Atkinson.
On offense, the Caps aren’t extremely flashy but they do have weapons. The obvious one being future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin, who has 18 goals and 11 assists through 37 games this year. He has three and two in his last five games.

Washington will hope to capitalize on the home ice advantage for this game and take away the Blue Jackets’ offensive game. If they’re successful, they’ll have the bragging rights of being the team to end Columbus’ streak.
