The first game back after the trade deadline for one of the league’s biggest potential sellers has the Colorado Avalanche travelling to Ottawa on Thursday night.
While the Sens have added to their lineup and look to jockey for position in the Atlantic with the Bruins, Leafs and Habs, the Avs are a team looking to the future.
As of this writing Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog are members of the Colorado Avalanche, but if that is still the case when the team hits the ice in Ottawa their fanbase will consider it a failure for GM Joe Sakic.
The last-place Avs will be looking to unload contracts and pick up draft picks on deadline day. Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene are both hoping they will be playing for a different team by the time the puck drops for this game.
Even if they are still Avs come game time however, I wouldn’t expect them to be putting in a command performance here.
Just now it has been revealed that Colorado has sent 39-year old Jerome Iginla to the Kings for a fourth round draft pick. Sakic is likely looking to make more moves.
27-year old rookie Jeremy Smith has gotten the start in net the last 3 games for the Avs, picking up his first NHL win on Saturday against the Sabres.
Smith let in 4 goals on 26 shots Tuesday in a 4-0 loss to the Flyers as well.
At this point the Avs are just trying to determine who will be hitting the ice with Nathan MacKinnon for future seasons.
Things are getting interesting in the Atlantic division as we approach the final quarter of regular season play. Not a single Canadian team made the playoffs last year, but there are 3 threatening to occupy the top spots available from the Atlantic.
The Sens are hoping to pull away from the Bruins, Leafs and Panthers over the next bit, and possibly threaten the Habs for top spot in the division.
The Sens have 3 games in hand on Montreal, but trail the division lead by 6 points. With a good stretch of hockey the Senators could be hot on Montreal’s doorstep by season’s end.
Ottawa is going all in as well, as they have recently picked up two key pieces for a potential deep playoff run. First GM Pierre Dorion picked up veteran winger Alex Burrows from the Canucks and has now added 31-year UFA Viktor Stalberg.
It has been awhile since Ottawa has invested in a “rent-a-player”, which should have the fanbase excited.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Colorado is 9-21-1 on the road this year
- Ottawa is 16-10-6 at home
- Avs have won 5 of last 6 in Ottawa
- Avs have won 9 of last 11 against Ottawa
Free Colorado Avalanche vs. Ottawa Senators NHL Hockey Prediction:
Each team will be adjusting line combinations for this game. In the case of the Sens it will be to work Burrows and Stalberg into the lineup. For Colorado however, it will be to accommodate for leaving players, at least they hope that is the case.
One team playing for playoff position, and the other playing for future contract offers. It is not hard to see who has the competitive advantage in this one.
