Coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Chicago Blackhawks will look for redemption against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.
Pittsburgh, off a 6-2 loss to Philadelphia, will look to snap a three-game losing streak when the Blackhawks come to town.
It’s been a wonderful year for the Chicago Blackhawks, fighting through injuries to key players and emerging as the top team in the Central Division. However, the team has looked poor in the last two games and needs to get back to winning immediately.
Offensively, the Blackhawks have been one of the league’s best, ranking 6th in the NHL in goals scored (229) and have six forwards that have more than 20 goals on the year.
Patrick Kane leads the team in goals and points, tallying 34 goals and 48 assists (82 total points), including three goals and two assists over his last five games.
Jonathan Toews, after a poor first half of the season by his standards, has come on strong since the All-Star Break. He has 20 goals and 35 assists, including two goals and two assists over his last five games.
The goaltending has been strong all-around for Chicago. Starter Corey Crawford is 30-16-3 with a 2.56 goals against average, while backup Scott Darling has played like a starter all year. Darling is 18-5-4 with a 2.32 goals against average.
Pittsburgh has lost three straight but let’s not be fooled into thinking there’s something wrong with this team. The Penguins have been solid all season and are 2nd in the toughest division in the NHL, the Metropolitan.
Pittsburgh has been the league’s best offensive team, ranking 1st in the NHL in goals scored (258). A lot of this production on offense has come from the captain and future Hall of Famer, Sidney Crosby. Crosby has 42 goals and 40 assists, including five goals in his last five.
Evgeni Malkin has been wonderful for this team as well. He has 33 goals and 39 assists, including four goals and an assist in his last five. However, he is likely to miss his sixth straight game on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury.
Injuries are killing this team right now, as defenseman Kris Letang, Trevor Daley, Carl Hagelin, Olli Maata, Connor Sheary, and Tom Sestito are all sidelined currently. This team has to get healthy before the playoffs or it will be a tough road ahead.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Chicago is 3-5 SU in the last eight games
- The Total has gone OVER in four of Chicago’s last five games
Free Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Hockey Prediction:
Chicago has looked extremely poor on the defensive end in the last two games, giving up 12 total goals. I think Pittsburgh will capitalize on this recent trend and grab a close victory. Penguins get the W in this one.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh ATS
Pittsburgh has two of the strongest forwards in the NHL in Crosby and Malkin. The Chicago defense has looked very shaky in the past couple of games. I like the Penguins to cover the spread in this one.
