The Canadiens have the luxury of playing at home, where they are 22-11-5 this season, in effort to pad their Division-leading point total against a bad road team.
Dallas will be playing for pride, as they currently sit 6th in the Central with 73 points, which are 20 fewer than their opponents’.
The downfall of the Stars’ season is keeping the puck out of the net, an area that will need to be addressed in the summer and will start with the goaltending position.
Dallas currently ranks 27th overall in the league in goals against, allowing an average of 3.1 per game. It’s probably safe to assume that Antti Niemi will be on his way out, as his 3.35 GAA and .892 SV% are certainly not enough to justify his $4.5-million/year price tag.
Expect GM Jim Nill to add an option to challenge current #1 netminder, Kari Lehtonen, as he has not exactly been stellar either. Lehtonen owns a .905 SV% and a 2.79 GAA in 54 appearances this season, with a 20-22-7 record.
Another team need is on the blueline, as the experiments with the aging Dan Hamhuis hasn’t provided the team with a top-4 Dman as they’d hoped. John Klingberg is a sold offensive defenseman, but will need help around him as it thins out significantly.
Luckily, the Stars offense is a bright spot, ranking 14th in goals per game at 2.7 on the season.
Patrick Sharp will be on his way out in all likelihood, opening up some salary cap room and roster slots for either younger players to step-in or new acquisitions to fill.
Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are amongst the best duos in the league and will be returning for reasonable prices.
The Habs have led the Atlantic Division all season and are looking for momentum heading into the post-season, entering the game on the back of a 3-1 victory against Ottawa.
Unlike their Dallas counterparts, Montreal is a team that relies on defense and goaltending.
The team is built around star goaltender, Carey Price, who owns a 2.25 GAA and a .923 SV% on the year with 34 wins.
The acquisition of Shea Weber, who came to Montreal in return for PK Subban, has highlighted the focus on the defense-first approach.
Weber has been excellent in red, white and blue, netting 17 goals and 42 points on the season which places him in a tie for 3rd overall on the team.
Captain Max Pacioretty is nearing career highs in points, having 61 on the year which is six short of his career best. Pacioretty leads Les Habitants with 33 goals, registering his fourth consecutive 30+ goal season.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Stars have the league’s worst penalty kill at just a 73.9% efficiency rate
- Dallas have a minus-32 goal differential on the season
- Dallas is 11-21-5 on the road this year
- Montreal is 22-11-5 at home
- Montreal has a plus-21 goal differential on the season
Free Dallas Stars vs Montreal Canadiens NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Stars are out of it, and have to play a Montreal team that is 10-4 in their last 14 games.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Montreal -1.5.
The offense will face a tough task trying to get by Shea Weber and Carey Price, especially considering the Stars have 10 wins in their last 25 road games and enter a hostile environment in the Bell Centre.
