A pair of Canadian teams look to snap their mini losing streaks as the Calgary Flames head to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs.
Calgary Flames
The Flames were embarrassed at home by the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, losing 7-3 in the Battle for Alberta.
Goaltender Chad Johnson was pulled after allowing three goals on Edmonton’s first four shots, and Brian Elliott didn’t fare much better in relief.
After signing Elliott in the offseason, the Flames are having a severe case of “buyer’s remorse.” Elliott, who led the Blues to the Western Conference Finals last season, is 8-11-2 with a save percentage of .893 and a bloated GAA of 2.87.

Johnson has been the better goalie of the two, but neither has been spectacular, and it’s why Calgary is clinging to the final playoff spot in the West.
Offense has also been a problem for the Flames. Last season, Calgary was top-10 in goals scored, but now find themselves tied for 19th. Forward Johnny Gaudreau has struggled this year with just 10 goals and a plus-minus of -15.
The Flames need him to get going if they want their offense to get back to last season’s success.
The Flames also have the red-hot Sean Monahan, however, who’s logged a goal in five straight games.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs have lost two straight after winning their previous three games, and the offense can shoulder the blame. Toronto has only scored two goals in each of last two games after scoring at least three goals in its previous 11 games.
This game provides a chance for the Leafs to get back to their scoring ways as they’ll face a Flames defense that’s allowed 11 goals in its last two games.
Toronto still ranks 6th in the NHL in scoring and is led by rookie sensation Auston Matthews and veteran James van Riemsdyk. Both forwards are tied for the team lead with 38 points apiece.

Like the Flames, the Leafs currently hold their conference’s final playoff spot, and a win against a struggling opponent would do them a world of good as we head into the All-Star break.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Flames are 7-5-1 vs. the Eastern Conference.
- Flames are 2-5 SU in their last 7 games.
- Maple Leafs are 1-4 SU in their last 5 home games.
- Maple Leafs O/U is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
Free Calgary Flames vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Hockey Prediction:
With the Flames struggling to keep the puck out of the net, I’m looking to play OVER the total in this game. Despite scoring just four goals in their last two games, the Leafs still possess one of the NHL’s best offenses.
The Flames have shown the ability to score goals as well, especially with Sean Monahan recording a goal in each of his last five games.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: OVER 5.5 Goals
With a heavy number on the Leafs, I’m sticking with the total.
