Monday night sees a premium NHL match-up in the Music City. Buffalo and Nashville are both among the best teams in the league; one is performing like everyone expected (Nashville) and one has been playing seemingly out of their depth (Buffalo). A road win for the Sabres would do much to convince everyone that the Sabres might be here to stay.
A collection of great youth and re-treads needing a fresh start have worked like gangbusters for the Sabres. Winger Jeff Skinner and goalie Carter Hutton, both of whom were in need of a fresh start, have come to the Queen City and played amazing. Skinner is right near the top of the league in goals and Hutton is providing the solid ‘tending necessary for sustained success in the NHL.
In terms of the youngsters, everyone knows about Jack Eichel – who was the prized draft pick if a young man named Auston Matthews didn’t exist – but there’s also D-man Rasmus Dahlin and young speedster Casey Mittelstadt. Mix in a savvy veteran with a last useful gasp (Jason Pominville) and it looks like Buffalo keep up with anyone this season. It’s been some nice news in a good sports city that has been starved for it.
Everyone knew that Nashville was in the upper snack bracket of the NHL hierarchy, and they haven’t disappointed so far. The Preds have every element of their game in order; great goaltending with habitual Vezina Trophy candidate Pekka Rinne, great defense with P.K. Subban, Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis and more than adequate goal-scoring with Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen.
Predators general manager David Poile is a respected veteran in the business, and the assets he has compiled in Nashville is proof of his expertise. Kyle Turris is also a great depth piece for Nashy. Poile has long done a great job and scouting and bringing on foreign players; effective Finns and Swedes have constantly been littered on Nashville’s roster. The Pred sit first in the Central division but need to re-assert that after losing six of their last 11 games. Looks like this is a statement game for both sides.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Sabres are 68-144 in their last 212 road games.
- Predators are 10-1 in their last 11 vs. Eastern Conference.
- Predators are 6-1 in their last 7 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Predators are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. Atlantic.
Free Buffalo Sabres vs. Nashville Predators NHL Prediction:
Tough to call, because both teams have had a great year but have hit speed wobbles most recently. Whichever team wins this game will be feeling good about having their trajectory back on track.
The Preds have the skaters to keep up with Buffalo’s new, fast nucleus, so it should be a contest with a very high ‘compete level’, as coaches are fond of saying. It could totally go either way, but I’ll give the slight nod to Nashville by virtue of it being at home in the raucous Bridgestone Arena. Tune into this game if you get a chance.
