NHL Hockey Season Previews – Washington Capitals

Looking for 2019 Washington Capitals predictions? The Capitals are coming off of a disappointing season last year as they were upset by the Carolina Hurricanes in a tough fought game 7. They did win the Metropolitan division with 104 points, but given their squad is ageing and know they have to win now the season will go down as a failure as it ended in a first round exit in the playoffs. Todd Reirden will look to rally the troops for what could be one last Stanley Cup run with this core.

If this franchise wants to get another Stanley Cup in this decade it is not hard to imagine this being their best shot as they have a fantastic, but aging roster.

2019 Washington Capitals Predictions: Team Strengths

This is a potent offense that the Capitals possess and I think this will remain as one of their biggest positives going into this new NHL season. Backstrom maintained his position as an A+ center last year with over 50 assists and figures to still have a few solid seasons left. Alex Ovechkin, despite being 34 years old, continues to crush with over 50 goals last season and once again will be the focal point of this offense.

Tom Wilson also had a career high 22 goals last season and is an important cog in this offense adding depth and grit to a top heavy squad. Jakub Vrana also appears as if he is coming into his own with over 20 goals last year and given he is only 23 years old their should still be room for more improvement.

There are also a handful of others who can put up plenty of goals like Kuvnetsov, Oshie and even defender John Carlson. There are reasons to believe some of these guys might slow down, but if they do maintain their level of perforamance this will be a very scary offense for any NHL team.

2019 Washington Capitals Predictions: Team Weaknesses

By far the biggest problem for this team is that they are ageing and there are no guarantees all these guys will put up the same numbers as last year. Will Alex Ovechkin, the first round pick all the way back in 2004, be able to put up yet another 50+ goal season? Is 32 year old TJ Oshie going to be able to stay consistent and put up another 50-60 point season?

Questions will also be brought up about 30 year old Braden Holtby if he does not start off that great as his numbers have not been nearly as good in the last two seasons. Those really are just a few of the question marks and with the NHL season around the corner we will get our answer as to if this is still a Stanley Cup contending team.

Washington Capitals Prediction: 50-25-7

I have the Washington Capitals being slightly better than last year although I think they will be a very similar team. The reason I have them doing slightly better is that I do not think the Metropolitan division is all that strong. I think they can beat up on some of these teams and certainly think they win the division again.

For me +1800 looks like a good price for this team to lift the cup as they don’t have a lot of weaknesses on this roster and think they will bounceback in the payoffs next year.
