Looking for 2019 New York Islanders predictions? The Islanders are coming off a solid season when you look at it from the outside, but may be bitter-sweet to the players. They surprised people by making such a big splash in the playoffs sweeping the Penguins in the first round before being swept themselves by the upstart Carolina Hurricanes. Barry Trotz’s men will now look to kick on and advance past the second round, but was last year a bit of a fluke?

The 2019-2020 season is just around the corner and it remains to be seen weather this Islanders team can replicate some of the magic of last year.
2019 New York Islanders Predictions: Team Strengths
The strengths of the Islanders is still going to be the goaltending and defense which was also really good last year. Robin Lehner was outstanding last year between the posts and many people will be surprised I listed goalkeeping as a strength as contract talks broke down between him and the Islanders and the team ended up letting him walk.
They did sign Varlamov who is outstanding when at is best and still retain Thomas Greiss who really came into his own last year sporting a .927 save percentage. I don’t see a reason this duo can’t keep up a solid level of play for this squad in 2019-2020.

There also remains no reason to think the defense will be worse as there were not many offseason moves and they retain most of their defensive core. They allowed the fewest goals last season and if this team ends up falling apart it will be because they cannot replicate the goaltending performance of last year, not because of the defensive unit.
2019 New York Islanders Predictions: Team Weaknesses
The likely weakness of this side is probably going to be goal scoring even though they have some talented guys up front. The main concern I have is right wing ans they have some declining players and not a lot of depth on the right side. The biggest question here will be if Jordan Eberle can have a bounceback season. Eberle had 19 goals and 18 assists last year which was his lowest point total since an injury shortened 2012-2013.

The other right winger they have is Josh Bailey who had a decent season last year, but also only had 16 goals. After those two guys the talent level drops off big time with guys like Cal Clutterbuck, Leo Komarov and Tom Kuhnhackl all fighting for ice time behind Eberle and Bailey.
Barry Trotz might realize this team’s shortcomings on the offensive end and may already be scheming to concentrate on playing defensive/ fundamental dump and chase hockey
New York Islanders Prediction: 45-30-7
The main worry most Islanders fans have is the goaltending situation. I think the tandem of Greiss/Varlomov will be just fine and so I see this team being very similar to last year as not many changes were made. This team might struggle going forward, but that will be more than made up for by their stout defense.
Look for the Islanders to be more or less the same this year and I predict they come in 3rd place in the Metropolitan division and likely get knocked out of the playoffs in the second round again.
