Akron is looking like the top team in the MAC this season. No surprise there.
Western Michigan is probably better than its record but it is going to need to pick it up in conference play if they are to show the improvement that was expected.
Akron has won four straight against Western Michigan, covering three of four in the process.
Western Michigan
WMU has a super tough road trip to start MAC play. They got trounced at Ohio and now they are off to Akron. Those may be the two best teams in the league.
The Broncs have one of the best players in the league in guard Thomas Wilder. At 16ppg he is a little down from the 18 he averaged as a sophomore.

He and Tucker Haymond form a pretty good backcourt (12ppg) but they are the only double figure scorers. Akron is a not a strong defensive group but their offense puts pressure on you to keep pace.
Inside the Broncos would love to get more from Drake LaMont.
The MAC has more power players than most realize but he is not producing as much as the really good bigs in the league, though he does have the size at 6’10” and 240.
WMU has no good wins but they have been playing teams pretty close so they may not be too bad. They have covered in their two games against the PAC 12 – UCLA and Washington.
Even though they might not be terrible this game looks like another loss…and perhaps an ugly one. Ohio beat them 89-58.
Akron Zips
The Zips are a good team but they probably need to win the MAC if they want to go to the Big Dance.
Their best accomplishment from the nonconference is likely a solid showing in a loss against Creighton.
Isaiah Johnson is one of the biggest players in the conference at 290 pounds and he has continued his evolution as a player. He is leading the team in scoring and rebounding and is also first in assists, showing a great basketball IQ.
The more he develops the better the Zips will be.

Akron has great depth with 5 other players scoring 9 or 10 points per game. This team is not loaded with stars but it is an experienced group and they have a lot of options.
Akron has the highest rated offense in the conference but they really haven’t played a difficult schedule. Within the league they have the ability to dominate.
