They kill your sleeping habits but I love the triangle in the WCC between BYU, St. Mary’s and Gonzaga. The games are always exciting and meaningful.
BYU is a good team that really pushes the pace. They are talented enough to beat anybody but sometimes have some clunkers on the road.
St. Mary’s is one of the most experienced teams in the country. They always operate with a thin margin though from so many tourney near misses.
BYU Cougars
BYU always has some extra challenges with roster construction but this year things are working out really well.
Eric Mika is back and showing little rust from his mission work. He is averaging better than 20ppg and gives the Cougars an inside presence.
In Nick Emery and TJ Haws they have too very smooth offensive players capable of busting out for big games. They both shoot well and are unselfish.

The Cougars always want to push the ball so rebounding is key. Yoeli Childs is just a frosh but he is second on the team in boards at over 8 per game. He and Kyle Davis don’t try to do too much, leaving the scoring to the aforementioned players.
This would be a big win for the Cougars, especially on the road. Last year they split with both teams winning at home.
This year’s BYU team is better than last year’s but it still might not be good enough to get this one.
St. Mary’s
A lot was made of the fact that St. Mary’s returned all of their starters from their strong team of a year ago. That kind of consistency is great but it does not make this an elite team.
Center Jock Londale, one of many Australians on the team is having a breakout season averaging 17ppg and just under 10rpg. He is a physical presence and critical to both their offense and defense. SMC is surprisingly 4th in points allowed this season – under 60ppg which is impressive.

They may not put up stellar numbers but having guards Emmett Naar and Joe Rahon would give any coach comfort. They make sure the Gaels never go to long without a good possession and this group is super efficient.
Similar to last year the Gaels are going to have to win and impress throughout the season. This is a big game for them, especially given they lost to UTA at home earlier in the year.
